🌴 Bali: Relaxation, Nature & Affordable Luxury

Bali is a go-to destination for relaxation and nature.

Whether it’s beach clubs, villas, or scenic rice terraces, Bali offers a more laid-back travel experience compared to Japan and Korea.

  • Korea Templestay: Essence Of 1,700 Year-old Buddhist Tradition

Korea Templestay: Essence Of 1,700 Year-old Buddhist Tradition

As part of the much-anticipated 2023-2024 Visit Korea period, Templestay is thrilled to announce the continuation of its immersive program under the name “Special Templestay,” specifically tailored for English-speaking foreigners. This unique opportunity invites you to engage with Korea’s rich 1700-year-old Buddhist tradition at major temples, providing a firsthand experience of the past in the present moment.

Anguksa Temple, Muju, Jeollabuk-do – A Gateway to Korea’s Living Buddhist Tradition

Temples serve as living embodiments of Korea’s ancient Buddhist heritage, offering you a profound connection to history and tradition. Templestay goes beyond the conventional tourist experience, allowing you to stay within these sacred spaces, immersing yourself in the daily lives, rituals, and practices of the resident monks.

Monasteries are not mere relics of the past; they are vibrant communities where monks continue to live, eat, sleep, and practice, upholding traditions that have endured for centuries. Through Templestay, you gain a unique insight into the dynamic and evolving nature of Korean Buddhism.

Preserving Tradition in the Modern Age

Despite the passage of time, the traditions of Korean Buddhism have persevered. Monks, as custodians of this cultural heritage, actively maintain and operate temples, engaging with the public to ensure the continuity of these ancient practices. A Templestay offers you a rare opportunity to experience the lives of monks, spanning from the distant past to the present day.

A Day in the Temple: A Journey Through Rituals and Reflection

A typical day in a temple is a vibrant tapestry of rituals and activities. The day begins with the resonating sound of the wooden handbell (Monk-tak) during the “Doryangseok” ritual at 3 to 4 a.m. Monks then proceed with the early morning “Yebul (Buddhist ceremony),” committing to follow the path to enlightenment as prescribed by Buddha. “Yebul” occurs three times daily, interspersed with temple upkeep activities (“Ulreok”) and designated roles for you.

At Templestay, you spend one night and two days at the temple, immersing yourself in activities mirroring the monks’ routines. From joining the “Yebul” ceremony to practicing “108 bae (108 prostrations)” and “Chamseon” meditation, you delve into the essence of Korean Buddhism. Additionally, you engage in the craft of making “yeomju,” Buddhist prayer beads, and share enlightening conversations with monks over tea, gaining insights into the practitioners’ mindset and finding moments for mental healing.

Temple Cuisine: A Culinary Journey Through Tradition and Mindfulness

Temple food offers you a distinctive culinary experience, prepared healthily without chemical additives and using ingredients sourced from nature. Reflecting a dietary culture that has sustained practitioners’ physical health throughout history, temple cuisine imparts the values of gratitude and moderation.

In the act of consuming temple food, you learn to appreciate the simplicity of “gratitude for everything” and practice the principle of moderation—consuming only what your body needs. The act of eating becomes a meditative experience, where you observe and acknowledge your body’s state with full concentration.

Choose Templestay for an Unforgettable Korean Experience

In the context of Korea’s rich past and vibrant present, Templestay stands out as a unique program for you, seeking immersion in Korean Buddhism. It provides a rare opportunity to feel the essence of this ancient tradition while exploring the cultural and spiritual landscape of Korea.

  • Revitalise Body, Mind & Spirit At JW Marriott Jeju Resort & Spa

Revitalise Body, Mind & Spirit At JW Marriott Jeju Resort & Spa

JW Marriott, part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of 30 extraordinary hotel brands, today announced the opening of JW Marriott Jeju Resort & Spa in Seogwipo, Jeju. Perched on a cliffside overlooking the stunning volcanic coastlines of the island, the new resort is a haven designed to let you focus on being mindful and present, creating experiences that nourish the body and spirit while respecting and celebrating the magnificence of its natural surroundings.

“We are delighted to introduce the JW Marriott brand to Jeju island, one of South Korea’s most beautiful holiday destinations with its unique culture, history and traditions, as well as its spectacular UNESCO World heritage-listed natural attractions,” said Bruce Rohr, Vice President and Global Brand Leader, JW Marriott. “JW Marriott Jeju Resort & Spa is an architectural masterpiece that exists in harmonious balance with its natural surroundings, and we are confident that this new opening will set a new benchmark for luxury resort offerings in the country.”

JW Marriott Jeju Resort & Spa is a beautiful fusion of nature and design. Its surroundings are directly connected to Route 7 of the island’s famous Olle Trail, a walking path that follows the coastline for approximately 17.7 kilometers, overlooking endless stretches of blue ocean and nearby Beomseom island. Jeju island is home to several UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Hallasan Mountain Natural Reserve, Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone, and the Getbol Tidal Flats. The island is a one-hour flight from Seoul, and the resort is an hour’s drive from Jeju International Airport.

JW Marriott Jeju Resort & Spa  – Harmonious Fusion of Nature & Architecture

The resort’s remarkable design is by luxury hotel designer Bill Bensley, who took inspiration from the raw natural beauty of Jeju and its farming and fishing traditions to bring the JW Marriott brand philosophy to life. The landscaping is a harmonious fusion of nature and architecture, representing a Jeju island farm complete with low lava stone walls, cabbage fields, and mustard flowers that bloom in springtime in a sea of yellow, a lucky color in Korea. Bensley used gray, black and white to represent the volcanic landscapes of Jeju, contrasting these colors with the abundant use of yellow throughout the resort. The palettes complement the exquisite hardwood furniture, creating the perfect backdrop for you to enjoy the resort’s luxury service and amenities.

JW Marriott Jeju Resort & Spa offers 197 guest rooms including 28 Suites, all appointed in natural wood and warm tones. The standard 45-square-meter Deluxe Rooms feature separate powder rooms, and the Suites are a spacious 92 square meters. Brunch starts with unlimited champagne, and premium caviar is served upon seating, complemented with coffees developed in collaboration with local roasteries.

The hotel’s signature BBQ and rotisserie restaurant, The Flying Hog, features a wood-fired oven in which Jeju black pork and beef are slow-roasted to perfection. If you wish to explore Jeju’s local dishes, Yeoumul is a Jeju-style omakase restaurant, featuring seasonal ingredients and fresh seafood harvested by the island’s local female divers called Haenyeo. The Lounge, with its resident coffee master, welcomes you with specialty coffees and a high tea set with special savoury menu items featuring locally produced lemons, carrots, and green barley from Gapado and peanuts from Udo. Accor unveils a captivating boutique hotel in Seoul with the opening of Hotel Naru Seoul – MGallery Ambassador. Designed to highlight an array of unique stories, South Korea’s first hotel in the MGallery Hotel Collection celebrates a perfect harmony of contemporary Korean design with the iconic Han River.

Hotel Naru Seoul – MGallery Ambassador – The Location

The Mapo-gu district has been a centre for transportation and commerce since the Chosun dynasty and continues this role today. The vibrant district is located on the northern banks of the iconic Han River, in close proximity to Incheon International Airport and the central business district. Several universities, government buildings, office towers, cultural sites, green spaces, and local dining destinations are located here, ensuring a vibrant mix of character.

Named after the original name of the area, Maponaru, the 196-key Hotel Naru Seoul – MGallery Ambassador reflects the spirit of the neighbourhood through its design aesthetic and guest offerings. Artists, poets, and painters have been drawn to Maponaru’s charming nature for generations. The natural beauty and artful roots of Korean culture serve as inspiration for this captivating hotel.

Featuring a modern exterior, shadow glass panels look out across the Seoul skyline connecting guests with the sweeping views of the river and allowing natural daylight to flow inside. Biophilic-inspired interiors create an intimate connection between guests and nature. The atmosphere is peaceful and calm. The Green Building certified hotel has been engineered to leave a minimal carbon footprint.

Before entering the hotel, art lovers can spend a moment admiring a giant sculpture, The Present of the Century, by local artist Jeonghwa Choi, which tells the inspiring stories of hope and love. Upon arriving in the natural-toned lobby on the 20th floor, guests are welcomed by another large cascading aluminium art installation, Airy Navigation, by the artist Haegyu Yang, reminiscent of Mapo’s history as a historic port location.

“Each MGallery hotel has a strong identity with a singular design that is steeped in the stories of each location. • Avani Central Busan Hotel Guests Undercover Busan’s Best Kept Secrets

Avani Central Busan Hotel Guests Undercover Busan’s Best Kept Secrets

The newly opened Avani Central Busan Hotel in South Korea’s second-largest city is taking guests down the road less travelled with the launch of a digital Insider Guide. Part of the #AvaniMe Resident programme, the guide was curated by Busan’s culture makers, trendsetters and creatives and is a manifestation of their love for their home town and its features. Busan is one of Asia’s most popular up-and-coming destinations thanks to a happy marriage of beach and urban attractions, therapeutic hot springs and seafood restaurants galore. But dig deeper, and there is more to this port town than meets the eye.

Avani Central Busan Hotel – Join The Discovery

Aspiring to show the hidden side of their city, the curators of the Insider Guide invite Avani guests to sidestep the established sights and zoom in on the cultural, artistic and culinary gems that Busan visitors rarely see on their whirlwind tours. From photogenic backstreet alleys and humble community eateries to trendy cafés with a penchant for nostalgia, the guide offers a deep dive into the local life.

At Suan Coffee, a specialty coffee brand with its roots in Busan, guests can sample local roasts as well as stocking up on the accoutrements of cold brewing. Another fixture of the local coffee scene is WERK, part of Jeonpo Café Street group roasting a wide variety of beans from around the region and baking what many consider to be the best macadamia cookie in Busan. If pressed for time, guests can have their craft coffee fix at the excellent Longpasse café located next door to Avani.

Perched on a high cliff in Yeongseon-dong town, Huinnyeoul Culture Village is a jumble of narrow winding streets and whitewashed houses with unobstructed vistas of the sea all around. Often referred to as ‘Korea’s Santorini’, the charming community was featured in the award-winning movie ‘The Attorney’.

For even more scenic views, stop at Choryang 845 serving home-style dishes in a beautiful hillside location overlooking the Busan Harbour Bridge.

With a rich programme of exhibitions putting a spotlight on challenging artworks in a wide array of genres, Busan Museum of Art’s five floors showcases the breadth of local and regional artistic talent, while a stroll around the sculpture garden reveals some interesting pieces.

J.Hidden House Seoul – Historic Grand Hanok Opens In Dongdaemun

The J.Hidden House, Seoul’s newest contemporary, destination cafe built into the hereditary foundations of a grand traditional Korean courtyard house (hanok) over a 100 years old (registered 1915), opened its doors in the fashion and shopping mecca of Dongdaemun today. The grand opening follows Seoul’s continued development as a trend-setting, global tourist destination and local aspirations to provide consumers with world-class offerings that showcase “the Best of Modern Korea.”

Situated within a spacious 300 square-meter (90 pyeong) secluded enclave housing a zen bamboo garden, the J.Hidden House is a beautiful blend of traditional and modern design which has been hand-crafted and curated in intentionally understated, contemporary minimalism. It is one of the largest hanoks open to the public today within the traditional “sadaemun” (great four gates) inner district of the Chosen dynasty’s (1392 – 1897) capital Hanseong (Seoul).

From a bespoke 8 meter wet bar set in Italian terrazzo tile, the J.Hidden House offers world-class curated coffees, teas and refreshments, as well as a tailored menu of bakeries and spirits cultivated by Korea’s leading and most cutting-edge food and beverage companies.

The establishment is introducing exclusive bakeries made with the high-quality ingredients sourced from around the world, coupled with Korean flavours, such as the “J. Jeju Croissant, a freshly baked croissant, made with the highest-grade French butter and filled with hazelnut chocolate topped with Jeju green tea powder.

The seasonally catered coffee beans are supplied by Devastate, one of Korea’s leading coffee roasters known for bespoke tailoring to the upscale, high-end palates of hallyu movie and TV stars and Cheungdam Dong and Hannam The Hill patrons.

The craft beer selection is from The Hand and Malt Brewing Co., the first Korean craft brewery to be acquired by the world’s largest brewing Anheuser-Busch InBev earlier this year and winner of multiple awards from specialist publications like Beer Post, Korea’s leading beer & culture magazine, and Beer Master Club, the nation’s largest craft beer aficionado social media group. Among the stand-out beer selection is “Zzalmac,” an exceptionally light and tropical tasting golden ale, which goes perfectly with J.Hidden House’s signature crispy “J. Jugyeom (Korean bamboo salt) Fries.”

The visually stunning and healthy fruit and herbal teas are all special recipes made with fresh seasonal fruit of Korea reflecting the peninsula’s four distinct seasons. These include Korean persimmon, pear, melon and Jeju hallabong. A house staple favourite is “J. Lemon Cream Latte,” a marriage of zesty lemon and whole milk cream.

For the upcoming winter season, the J. Hidden House’s signature hot menu selection is homemade “J. Daegu Apple Cider” and J. Vin Chaud,” a warm, mulled and 100 per cent organic wine cocktail incorporating cinnamon, ginger and citrus that is a staple at Christmas markets all over Europe.

Located in an exclusive “hidden,” but an immediately accessible location in downtown Seoul, the destination offers a special passage back in time into a tranquil, spacious serenity despite being centrally situated in Dongdaemun, one of the city’s busiest commercial districts and a major tourist destination for shopping and historical site seeing. Outside its doors is Korea’s National Treasure #1 Heungjnjimun (the Great East Gate), Dongdaemun Market and Zaha Hadid designed Dongdaemun Design Plaza.

Seoul has become a destination for the world to visit and Korea’s rich culture has so much to offer.  This establishment is a fusion of our country’s traditional heritage and dynamic modernization by coupling cutting-edge modernity within the protected, mindful walls of a ‘hidden’ hanok that was built before the Korean War and has stood the test of time,” said Grace Jun, proprietor of the J.Hidden House. “Our aim is to provide locals and tourists from around the world with a location and a curated food and beverage offering on calibre with any destination cafe in the world while offering what is uniquely and proudly Korean.”

The gentrification of central Seoul by aspiring young, hip Korean entrepreneurs who have travelled abroad and understand what today’s well-travelled, global patrons want has boomed in recent years.  The neighbourhoods of Ikseon dong, Bukcheon and Seochon have seen a proliferation of speciality craft shops, bakeries, breweries and diverse restaurants over the past three years. The J. Hidden House is now bringing that gentrification trend to the heart of the historic shopping mecca that is Dongdaemun.

The J.Hidden House was designed by Design Mori, a boutique design shop credited for helping the meteoric emergence of Ikseon dong hanok village an area that has become immensely popular among global tourists and young locals for its hip shops and unique cafes built into small renovated traditional Korean houses. Prior to J.Hidden House, which is Design Mori’s most ambitious and largest project to date, the design firm built Summer, Salon de Bangkok and Simple Tokyo in Ikseon dong.
