Some films linger long after the credits roll, and then there is In The Mood For Love, a cinematic poem of longing and restraint that returns to you in full HD on the big screen at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, on 24 and 25 October 2026, accompanied by a live symphony orchestra performing Shigeru Umebayashi’s haunting score in perfect sync under the baton of Singapore’s internationally acclaimed Joshua Tan.
Presented by Base Entertainment Asia, In The Mood For Love In Concert transforms Wong Kar Wai’s 2000 masterpiece into an immersive cinematic concert experience. Renowned for its poetic storytelling and sumptuous visuals, the fully restored film unfolds as the BASE Philharmonic Orchestra performs every note live, heightening the emotional resonance of each glance, each silence and each unspoken word.
The story remains as tender and bittersweet as ever. A man, played by Tony Leung, and a woman, portrayed by Maggie Cheung, discover that their spouses are having an affair. In navigating their own loneliness and restraint, an intimate bond forms, quiet yet deeply moving. Wong Kar Wai’s distinctive use of vibrant colours and intimate close ups creates a dreamlike atmosphere, and now, with live orchestral accompaniment, the emotional textures deepen even further.
Described by Wong Kar Wai as “a poem itself,” Shigeru Umebayashi’s score becomes the emotional spine of this experience. With fashion, light, colour and movement woven seamlessly together, the live performance invites you to immerse yourself fully in the film’s rich nuances and aching beauty.
Leading the orchestra is Joshua Tan, celebrated for his versatility across symphonic, operatic, ballet, film and multimedia repertoire. A graduate of The Juilliard School and the Eastman School of Music, and a recipient of Singapore’s Young Artist Award, Tan has conducted orchestras including the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. His leadership of the BASE Philharmonic Orchestra ensures that the soundtrack is rendered with sensitivity, technical mastery and emotional depth.
