  • Royal Caribbean Jamie’s Italian – A-La-Carte Italian Buffet Out At Sea

Royal Caribbean Jamie’s Italian – A-La-Carte Italian Buffet Out At Sea

During our recent 4D3N Singapore-Port Klang review of Spectrum of the Seas, we had the opportunity to try out Jamie’s Italian aboard and to see what they had to offer. The recent news about them faced with issues back in the UK did not seem to affect its international stores, including at its locations on board the various Royal Caribbean ships that host them.

    Royal Caribbean Jamie’s Italian – It’s Non-complimentary Italian Buffet!

Unlike some of the other paid restaurants on board the ship (and unlike other Jamie’s Italians you’ll find on land) where the menu is a la carte in nature, Jamie’s Italian shares more in common with the complimentary dining options on board in that you pay a flat price for either the lunch or dinner menu, and that lets you try anything and everything on the menu, in whatever quantities you want!

Royal Caribbean Jamie’s Italian – The Spread

The downside is that the menu is not as broad or as diverse as you’d find at a typical Jamie’s Italian restaurant, but what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. There are four or five categories of items, including hot appetizers, mains, pastas, salads, desserts and sides, with each category offering between two to six items.

We chose a selection of six items – a mix of starters and pastas. After all, when at an Italian restaurant, you should always try the pasta, right? Unfortunately, we were too full from everything else (breakfast) that we were not able to try out the signature Jamie’s Italian item – the “Our Famous Meat Plank”, a selection of cured meats and cheeses (including salami, mortadella, mozzarella, olives and pickles).

Royal Caribbean Jamie’s Italian – Food Is Served!

But everything we chose came out exceptionally well. Highly recommended was the Ultimate Garlic Bread, two petite freshly baked loaves hot out of the oven and slathered with rich and garlicky butter and topped with shaved parmesan cheese and fresh herbs. The bread was pull-apart soft yummy with the aroma of buttermilk, and the subtle hints of garlic perfectly complemented the sharp and salty parmesan for an appetizing way to start the meal.

Equally good was the Black Truffle Arancini, gooey cheesy balls of risotto goodness breaded and fried to a crisp. Topped with more grated cheese and shavings of black truffle for an added touch of elegance. Each Arancini was bite-sized and perfectly easy to down in one or two bites.

Simpler in flavour but no less enjoyable were the Crispy Polenta Chips. Essentially chunks of cooked polenta (cornmeal) shaped into strips and deep-fried, the combination results in a potato chip-like consistency that is crunchy on the outside and creamy and smooth on the inside. Like many of the other starters, the polenta chips came topped with shaved Parmesan cheese and fresh rosemary, which worked very well.

To balance out all the carb-heavy items, we had to order some protein. That came in the form of the Crispy Squid. This was a fairly standard item, though the squid was tender and not too rubbery and the batter was light and crunchy. The lemon and garlic mayo served on the side helped to cut through some of the greases.

On to the mains! We ordered the Tagliatelle Bolognese and the Baked Lasagne. The tagliatelle was freshly made on board and cooked to a decent and al dente bite, and smothered in a rich Bolognese sauce made with pork, beef and red wine. Generally well done, with a decent portion size that wasn’t too difficult to finish, it was a clear winner.

The Baked Lasagne was very similar in terms of taste as well, which wasn’t unexpected since the base sauce seemed to be similarly made from a mix of rich tomato, beef and pork. The added creaminess of the cheese and bechamel sauce mixed together with the sheets of fresh lasagne pasta made for an interesting blend of flavours.

We almost did not have the chance to sample their dessert menu, because of the unexpected arrival of a whole birthday cake (friends can order in advance). But we decided to have the cake delivered back to our cabin and go for the desserts anyway. The cake, by the way, was absolutely amazing. We finished half of it while watching movies in our cabin late at night.

The Tiramisu made out of coffee & Kahlúa-flavoured sponge, orange mascarpone & chocolate shavings was amazing and definitely, a must order to end off the entire meal on a high sweet note.

The Salted Caramel Ice Cream was nice but not exactly unforgettable.

Jamie’s Italian can be found on various Royal Caribbean ships, including Spectrum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas. The dress code is casual. Lunch is between US$20-$25 per person, while dinner is between US$30-$40 per person, depending on the ship. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are extra and not included in the price of the meal.

Costa Cruises Sails In To Offer Exotic Itineraries To Asian Travellers

Costa Cruises, the world’s largest travel and leisure company, announces 2019 programmes tailor-made for Southeast Asia. Costa Fortuna will offer exotic itineraries in Southeast Asia while Costa neoRomantica will explore the diverse coastal regions of Japan and South Korea. The newly-built Costa Venezia will enter Asia in April, offering immersive Italian experience for Asian travellers.

Costa Cruises – Arrival Of Costa Fortuna In Singapore

Costa Fortuna will homeport in Singapore this season from now until 26 February 2019. The entertainment ship, which can accommodate over 2,700 guests, is offering options from 3 – 9 nights, visiting historic Penang and Melaka in Malaysia, as well as overnight in Phuket and Laem Chabang in Thailand. A special overnight in Langkawi for the New Year cruise is also available.

Costa Fortuna is a glorious 102,587-tonne cruise ship housing numerous lush facilities and a whopping 1,358 guest cabins in total. Inspired by Italian steamships of the past, she is a “museum at sea” complete with exquisite antique pieces and recreations of artworks on display.

From 10 to 16 December 2018, Costa Fortuna will go on an 8-million-euro renovation that involves the restyling of many public areas and the introduction of new services for guests, including Pizzeria Pummid’Oro that will serve pizzas made with top quality ingredients and mozzarella produced on board; Bar Amarillo, a new gelateria where guests can treat themselves to handmade ice cream; a photo shop featuring the new “My Moments” concept that will provide guests with a refreshing photo-taking experience; a retail shop just for Costa-branded clothing and accessories, and many more new offerings.

After renovation work is completed in Singapore, Costa Fortuna, from 16 December 2018 to 26 February 2019, will sail on two different one-week itineraries, which can be combined, departing from Singapore to discover Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia. On March 5, 2019, the repositioning cruise will take place from Singapore to Genoa, which will be the ship’s main departure port for the rest of the year.

Costa Cruises – Costa Venezia Inaugural Cruise

Additionally, in March next year, the inaugural cruise of Costa Cruises’ new ship, Costa Venezia, will also set off from Trieste, Italy, on a 53-day, eastward-bound itinerary in the footsteps of Marco Polo that will end in Yokohama, Japan.

Like the Venetian explorer’s journey, the 135,500-tonne cruise ship equipped with 2,116 cabins will take guests on a voyage of discovery through different cultures, landscapes and flavours – the ship will leave the Mediterranean and cross the Suez Canal and the Red Sea before entering the Persian Gulf, calling at Dubrovnik, Bari (Italy), Greece, Israel, Jordan and Oman on the way. After stops at Dubai and Abu Dhabi – futuristic cities built in the middle of the desert – the ship will then head towards India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. The last leg of the cruise will be the Far East: Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and finally Japan.

Costa Venezia is designed and built specifically for the Asian market. It will bring to life the passions of Venetian and Italian culture through such spectacles as the Carnival of Venice and the city’s famed gondolas. Guests will also be able to sample the delights of fine Italian dining, luxury Italian shopping and world-class entertainment while enjoying home comforts such as a wide range of Asian cuisines and karaoke bars.

Costa Cruises – Costa neoRomantica Homeports Japan

Costa neoRomantica, the gem of the Costa fleet, is currently homeporting in Japan. Her fly/cruise itineraries ranging from 4 to 8 nights, sailing either from Fukuoka or Tokyo, are designed to immerse guests in the magic of the diverse coastal destinations, where they can enjoy the sights and sounds of Japan and South Korea in a different way.

Costa neoRomantica’s interior design stands out for its contemporary style and was completed by a combination of work by Tillberg Design, a Swedish architectural firm, and Syntax, the London-based company specialising in prestigious hotels and spas. With her welcoming atmosphere, exceptional amenities, and an even more thoughtful, attentive service, she is a proper elegant hotel on the waves.

Costa neoRomantica also takes pride in its signature Samsara Spa, the largest spa at sea, of 4,400sqm and over two storeys of top-of-the-line facilities, featuring an indoor, two-level Thalassotherapy pool that massages bodies with jets of warm mineral-rich sea water, Turkish baths, Tepidarium (heated ceramic loungers), Laconium (similar to sauna but with more gentle heat), sauna, aromatic steam room, UVA-ray solarium, treatment rooms that offer a wide range of treatments from around the world, as well as a Japanese tea room, resting lounge, and a high- ceiling gym that offers splendid views of the sea.

Apart from dining at Botticelli, the ship’s elegant main dining restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, and at the light and airy Giardino self-service buffet restaurant, Costa neoRomantica also offer many other culinary options for guests.

Three-Michelin-starred restaurant 81⁄2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana’s chef Umberto Bombana, known as the “King of Truffles” by the industry, has customised a menu for Costa Cruises. At the intimate and romantic Casanova Restaurant, an 8-course fine-dining menu, including a choice of oven-roasted Tuscany-style Suckling Pig or pan roasted Australian Wagu Beef Tenderloin can be savoured at USD59. La Fiorentina Steakhouse, another elegantly appointed restaurant, offers exquisite steak and seafood menu. For the past 12 years, Costa Cruises focuses on innovation and excelsior to bring Asian passengers the most creative and high-quality cruise products with the flavour of “Italy at Sea”.

Meticulously designed to accommodate the modern day lifestyle of the most discerning wanderlust souls, the 41-metre, two-cabin vessel epitomises a fine balance between playful mingling and reflective solitude.  With ample indoor and outdoor living spaces to comfortably accommodate families or small groups, Gypsy also features a communal mid-ship lounge, bar and dining area, as well as a separate veranda style lounge with an al fresco panorama deck at the bow of the boat.

For Bangkok based design consultant Ms Jiraparnn Tokeeree from TOUCHABLE, furniture and interior design is more approachable and touchable than the abstract concept of art – for her, art is all around us and she adapts aesthetics and artistic aspects into her designs in order to accentuate this notion.  For the Mekong Kingdoms Cruises Gypsy interior design project, she fashioned a harmonious social atmosphere of modern homely design, juxtaposed with hints of the glamorised bygone era of romantic voyaging.

Wood and thatch throughout blend seamlessly with the verdant surrounds of the mighty Mekong River’s shores through floor-to-ceiling windows and from open sun decks.  The boat’s contemporary designed interiors feature tongue and groove wood panelled ceilings, floors and walls; etched wooden cupboards and closets; solid wood tables; dark woven leather seating; and oversized bamboo daybeds. Local handwoven ornaments adorn the spaces and freshly cut flowers create a naturally soothing ambience, while Thai silk and fabrics drape the furniture in bold colours and lustrous appeal.

The well-appointed spacious sleeping cabins are fully air-conditioned and consist of a king bed and twin beds configurations, each with an en-suite shower and vanity.  Intimate touches of bathrobes and slippers; crisp white bed linen; regular and feather pillows; and a choice of exquisite bathroom amenities provide convenient functions with the comfort of home.  A hairdryer, vanity and makeup mirror are provided, while a personal safe promises in-room safety.

Cruising along the majestic mighty Mekong River from near the world-renowned Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort in Chiang Rai to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang conjures up images of old Indochina, of languorous days gone by, teeming with exhilarating river adventure, mystical temples and stunning untouched scenery.  Voyagers will be captivated by the languid river lifestyle, soaking in nature’s wonders along the Mekong River Valley, marvelling at encounters with fascinating local cultures as they stop at villages and attractions along the way.

Daily shore excursions offer a mix of age-old culture, local immersion and adrenaline-charged adventure and include guided jungle treks; mountain biking in Ban Houy Phalam; freshwater fishing; a traditional weaving workshop at Ban Baw; Laos whisky tasting; a visit to a little known elephant camp in Pak Beng; and the Pak Ou caves – with its breathtaking limestone karst formations, these two caves have been gifted thousands of Buddha images, left by pilgrims over the centuries. Even while cruising the placid waters, you and your loved ones can enjoy a range of wellness, cultural and fun diversions on board, including yoga; folk dancing; learning to speak the Laos language; weaving workshop; and cooking class.

After an adventurous day of exploring Southeast Asia’s most beguiling waterway, the boat’s open decks offer a welcome respite to savour a decadent Champagne high tea while watching the world go by.  As the sun sets, cocktails on the panorama deck are the order of the day before retreating to the dining area for an evening of fine dining and imbibing, courtesy of the onboard chef.

Rates start from USD 5,450 for three nights, four-day cruise from Luang Prabang, Laos, to the Golden Triangle, Thailand; and from USD 6,950 for two nights, three days cruise from the Golden Triangle to Luang Prabang.  Rates are per boat for up to four guests and include all onboard meals; welcome reception with canapés; soft beverages, water, beer, selected wines and coffee and tea; Wi-Fi; shore excursions, English guide, entrance fees and transfers; onboard activities; return airport or hotel transfers; and gratuities.  Children aged four years and under travel free. Launched in November 2016, Genting Dream is designed for your dreams – featuring the comfort of authentic Asian hospitality with some of the best global experiences. Come join us on our very first Dream Cruise experience!

Dream Cruises Genting Dream – Ship Design

The first thing you probably notice before you board the ship would be Dream Cruises Genting Dream’s stunning and fantastical hull artwork from renowned Chinese pop-artist Jacky Tsai. Titled ‘Voyage of a Lover’s Dream’, it tells the surreal love story between a mermaid and an astronaut, and combine the essence of oriental culture with popular elements of Western art.

Dream Cruises Genting Dream – Check In

Getting onboard the ship is simple, fast and efficient. You will be issued with your personal card that grants you access to your stateroom, allow you to charge all expenses onboard to the card and tell you where you are supposed to gather in times of emergencies. Take care not to lose the card!

Dream Cruises Genting Dream – The Staterooms

Over 70% of Dream Cruises staterooms come with private balconies and we were glad ours had one too! There is seriously nothing more amazing than waking up to incredible view and sound of the sea.

Our stateroom offered lots of legroom and we love their ‘Dream Beds’. These beds are an amazing combination of high-quality mattresses, silky- smooth sheets, bouncy duvets and a mountain of pillows.

Dream Cruises Genting Dream – Ship Interiors

We know the staterooms are awesome but there is so much more to do on the ship! Explore every nook and corners to seek out cool Instagram-worthy spots on board.

This romantic stairway encapsulates the story that captures hopes and imagination – the love between an astronaut and a beautiful mermaid.

For ladies looking for exclusive pampering and rejuvenation, there is Crystal Life. Home to both contemporary and traditional treatments from Asia and the rest of the world, you can spend hours there on rejuvenating experiences. It features the largest Asian reflexology spa at sea, plus over 20 private rooms for Western spa and massage treatments. And if you are thinking of sweating off your onboard indulgences, there is a state-of-the-art fitness centre and modern wellness cuisine.

Dream Cruises Genting Dream – The Great Outdoors

Your time on Dream Cruise is not just sleeping, eating, drinking and repeat. There are loads of outdoor activities onboard for you and your entire family to enjoy the sun! Thrill-seekers with a spirit of high adventure should go for the 35-metre zip line for an adrenalin-pumping glide over the side of the ship with the ocean’s waves lapping 18 decks below.

If your kids are searching for excitement, you can’t beat the fun of their Waterslide Park. Take the plunge and enjoy the thrill of speeding through the water high above the ocean. The ships feature six slides to experience; gentler ones for the family and faster ones for thrill-seekers.

Dream Cruises Genting Dream – The Chomps

Everyone adore good food. You can either go for the buffet at the Lido which offers a mouth-watering spread of Indian and International cruises. Of course, if a buffet is not your style, you can always opt for set meal dining at Dream Dining Room. You get to savour a wide variety of Asian and international cuisine in a dramatic ballroom dining setting, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows so you can take in the spectacular ocean views.

Other than the complimentary dining spots, you can also choose to experience for the non-complimentary dining venues. We went for Umi Umi on our first evening. It was an entertaining culinary experience to dine at one of the restaurant’s grand teppanyaki tables. Our personal chef did more than just cook, he was also a highly interactive performer – slicing, dicing and flipping our meal right before our eyes.

There are other non-complimentary options such as HotPot, Seafood Grill, Bistro By Mark’s Best as well as the beautiful Silk Road Chinese Restaurant. We love the distinctive old glamour setting of Silk Road.

If you are one who needs cakes and coffee to round up your meal, you will not be disappointed. There are cafes and bars around for you to chill and chit chat with your loved ones.

Dream Cruises Genting Dream – Bubblies Onboard

Wanna get tipsy? Bar City is the place for you. Take your pick from a collection of unique venues, including Johnnie Walker House, Penfolds Wine Vault, Mixt cocktail bar and Bubbles champagne bar. This Johnnie Walker House is the world’s first at sea. Complete with a tasting bar where you can discover, appreciate and even purchase a selection of the rarest John Walker & Sons variants and single malts not available elsewhere!

Bubbles feature an extensive selection of the best champagne, making it the ideal place for a celebration. Just order by the glass or get a bottle and chill out at this beautiful lounge bar, which also features a menu of delightful canapés to make it a truly elegant evening.

Dream Cruises Genting Dreams – Voyage of a Lover’s Dream

One of the highlights of the cruise was its epic performance – Voyage of A Lover’s Dream at the luxurious 999-seat Zodiac Theatre.

This is Dream Cruises’ signature production show which portrays a surreal relationship between a mermaid and an astronaut. The acrobatics display and special effects make it a show not to be missed when you are onboard. Early reservation is recommended.

Can you spot the astronaut and the mermaid finally meeting each other?

Dream Cruises Genting Dream is a well-balanced cruise ship that offers something for everyone in the family. Do make your stateroom reservations early to avoid disappointment!
