This bar itself is an ode to timeless elegance where every cocktail is a curated narrative, reflecting the intricate tapestry of Thompson’s life. The skilfully crafted menu showcases Thompson’s myriad adventures and his larger-than-life persona in four chapters. Each chapter, from his early life to his associations with the O.S.S., and his profound connection to Thailand, offers cocktails inspired by pivotal moments and locales in his journey.

The menu is designed as a field manual, where each drink unfolds a tale. Symbols hinting at its flavour profile – sweet, sour, spicy, bitter or more – convey a nuanced message in a glass. Instead of traditional ingredients, scenes from Jim Thompson’s life offer subtle clues about the cocktail’s essence.

‘Chapter I – Early Life’ delves into Thompson’s formative years. Born March 21, 1906, in Greenville, Delaware, USA, to a prominent textile magnate father he was a descendant of Union General James Harrison Wilson. This chapter gives rise to two evocative cocktails: ‘The Grand Papa’, a luscious, sweet blend, and ‘Class of 28’, a robust drink with subtle bitter notes.

‘Chapter II – The O.S.S. Time’ reflects on Jim Thompson’s tenure in military intelligence, capturing the essence of missions like ‘Fort Monroe’, ‘Operation Forth’, ‘Ceylon’ and ‘C47’. The flavour profiles trace his covert journeys from America, through North Africa and Ceylon, culminating in Bangkok.

‘Chapter III – Thailand: A Dream Come True’ unveils Jim Thompson’s time as Thailand’s silk king. Celebrate this era with concoctions like the thrilling ‘Golden Banana’ and the balanced ‘The House on the Klong’.  While ‘K.YEE & K.TUN‘ pays homage to Thompson’s dependable cook and houseboy who were a soothing constant in his life. The chapter concludes with the captivating ‘Sunset at Mekong’, a liquid ode to Southeast Asia’s mesmerising allure.

‘Chapter IV – The Unsolved Mystery’ delves into the enigmatic disappearance of Jim Thompson in 1967 in Malaysia’s jungles, represented by two cocktails: ‘Moonlight Cottage’ and ‘Mystery’. While ‘Moonlight Cottage’ is inspired by the Cameron Highlands, ‘Mystery’ remains the bartender’s secret – every sip evokes the profound mystery surrounding Thompson’s last days.

Beyond the captivating tales spun by the cocktails, you can explore a vast repertoire of beverages from artfully crafted mocktails to a curated wine list. You can also explore Thailand’s rich spirit heritage with authentic Thai spirits, each telling a story of craftsmanship, while whisky enthusiasts can rejoice over an array of choices, ensuring a memorable tasting journey. The Runway Report

The show unfurled a collection that melded the rich heritage of Thai textiles with a contemporary flair for the global stage. The opening sequence transported the audience with an Orchid Silk Wrap Kaftan Dress.  Its soothing blend of blue, gold, and brown flowed effortlessly in a laid-back yet refined manner. The unexpected touch of modernity came from the Medieval Blue FitFlops, setting the stage for a preview of the FitFlop x Jim Thompson House on the Klong collection. This collection, slated for a 2024 launch, infuses footwear with patterns inspired by the lush environment of the Silk King’s abode.

As the show progressed, the narrative deepened with ensembles that intertwined tradition with modernity. A light blue midlength dress with a delicate floral pattern provided a serene contrast, its fine silk fabric echoing the brand’s legacy of silk-making.

Men’s looks broke the runway’s surface with the ease of a tropical breeze. The Ikat Paisley Linen Shirt and Palm Linen Elastic Waist Shorts infused casual with chic, while a navy and white silk print shirt paired with white cargo shorts and a signature bucket hat offered an urban edge. Extending the vibe were the Embroidered Cotton Hawaiian Shirts and solid cotton Polo shirts (long- and short-sleeved), paired with casual white pants or fishermen’s pants, a signature JT move.

Women’s wear returned with the Solid Linen Loose Ruffle Neck Blouse and Silk Rope Drawstring Shorts, a canvas of vivid yellow and white floral print, accessorised with woven handbags and scarves.

Further into the collection, the showcase presented a pastel tableau for men’s and women’s wear. The men’s Shadow Rayon Silk Mandarin Shirt and women’s Silk Habotai CoverUp Dress in gentle green cinched with a belt, projected effortless elegance for semi-formal affairs.

The summery green Roses Silk Habotai Ruffle Sleeveless Maxi Dress with its striking delicate ruffle details segued into the Bunga Sari Silk Habotai Loose Ruffle Neck Blouse in black with intricate floral designs, paired with Solid Silk Zip Fisherman Pants in green. Continuing the floral motif was a black Bunga Rayon/Silk Habotai BowTie Midi Dress rounding off with a bold, monochromatic Solid Silk Puff Shoulder Mini Dress in green, offset by an orange and black Bunga Sari Silk Twill Mini Bag.

The Sarung Crêpe Cotton ensembles for men and women celebrated patterns and textures. The woman’s Smock Waist Off Shoulder Dress in earthy florals and the men’s Classic Short Sleeve Shirt echoed in print and sentiment, united by a silk twill ribbon, adding a narrative of colour and cultural resonance. Another standout was the asymmetrical ruffled skirt in navy and a solid vivid pink blouse and dress.

The sophisticated men’s monochromatic jacquard suit was mirrored in a Palm Tone on Tone Silk/Cotton HalterJacquard Dress, ideal for an evening event or cocktail party. An unexpected spin-off was the coordinated orange silk jacquard ensemble for women – the top featured a peplum, with matching trousers for a streamlined look.

The ‘his and hers’ Showstoppers juxtaposed regal opulence with tailored modernity – a Metallic Gold Double Breasted Blazer paired with Silk Drawstring Pants captured the essence of contemporary style.

The culmination was a homage to royal elegance, the final look – an Ikat Silk/Metallic Jacquard Gown, inspired by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother’s iconic Thai silk gown. The gown was a tribute to Thai heritage reimagined for the modern connoisseur.

The Jim Thompson runway at the opening of Jim Thompson Heritage Quarter paid homage to Thai craftsmanship, marking a milestone in the brand’s journey towards becoming a global lifestyle icon with the new tagline, ‘Beyond Silk.’

Nestled on Surawong Road, the heritage-rich thoroughfare that runs from the city’s lively Silom district to the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Le Méridien Bangkok is surrounded by art galleries, installations and cultural venues. This makes it the perfect base for curious explorers who want to uncover the beating heart of this cosmopolitan city.

From the moment you step into this newly-reimagined hotel, they are immersed in a world of art and design. At the main entrance stands I-Jud, (or “Dots Dog”) the giant white dog installation that was created by Thai artist Wasinburee Supanichvoraparch and is designed to represent the journey of art. As part of Le Méridien’s ‘Arrival Art’ programme, I-Jud also reflects the playful spirit of the brand and makes a striking first impression.

This light-hearted welcome is followed up with whimsical interpretations of Bangkok street life and carefully curated artworks – including colourful mini I-Jud statues – which flow through the lobby and Latitude Bar. Guests, visitors and local residents can even purchase their own I-Jud, along with other original pieces at the hotel’s boutique, which makes Le Méridien Bangkok a focal point for all fans of contemporary art. Prices for I-Jud range from just THB 1,500 net for a mini statue to THB 17,000 net for a large version.

For in-house guests who want to explore this eclectic neighbourhood, Khun Kok Thooptong, the hotel’s Chief Concierge, can recommend many intriguing attractions in the local area. On Surawong Road, The Neilson Hays Library is a charming neoclassical building that houses more than 20,000 books, a gallery and café, while the edgier side of Bangkok’s urban art scene can be found further down the road, where a series of large and colourful graffiti works adorn the walls – the result of a collaborative project for the BUKRUK art festival.

Reaching the riverside at Charoen Krung Road, the former Bangkok General Post Office is a vast brutalist building that has been reinvented as a public cultural hub. Home to the Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC), it now features 50,000 books, journals and multimedia pieces, as well as exhibition spaces that host inspiring events. Under Le Méridien’s ‘Unlock Art™’ programme, you can enjoy complimentary access to TCDC by presenting their ‘Discover Unlock Art™ Guest Pass’ (which can be found in every hotel room) upon arrival at the venue. A Gallery Walk also lets visitors uncover a number of independent art galleries in the TCDC precinct or further along the river – a wonderful opportunity to stroll at leisure, investigate the local “sois” (alleyways) and soak up daily life.

Not far away, River City Bangkok is a hub of art and antiques and a great place to grab a refreshing riverside drink. Explorers who take the public ferry across to the opposite bank will alight amid a cool enclave of art and lifestyle at Jam Factory – an upbeat community space that stages regular events including a farmer’s market and pop-up concerts.

“Le Méridien Bangkok has always been proud to support and promote the arts, so we are delighted to invite our appreciative guests to discover what makes the Thai capital such a captivating cultural destination. Surawong Road is among the most intriguing streets in the city, with diverse attractions that showcase the city’s traditional and modern faces. From classical imagery to colourful graffiti, we can help all art lovers unlock the creative spirit of Bangkok,” said Mr. Dieter Ruckenbauer, General Manager, Le Méridien Bangkok.

  • SO Sofitel Hua Hin Resort Ultimate Fun Activities Checklist

SO Sofitel Hua Hin Resort Ultimate Fun Activities Checklist

SO Sofitel Hua Hin is a luxurious beachfront resort located on the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 2.5 hour’s drive from Bangkok. For our recent long weekend getaway to Bangkok, we decided to weave in a relaxing getaway within a getaway at SO Sofitel Hua Hin.  Whether you are looking for a relaxing retreat or an action-packed adventure, SO Sofitel Hua Hin Resort has something for everyone. Follow us as we explore some of the top activities and experiences you must try at the beach resort!

    1. SO Sofitel Hua Hin Resort – Water Sports & Beach Cycling

SO Sofitel Hua Hin boasts a private beach that stretches over 100 meters along the Gulf of Thailand. We get to choose from a variety of water sports activities such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and beach volleyball. The resort also provides sun loungers and beach umbrellas for us to just relax and soak up the sun. We also paid a small fee to bring the resort bicycles out to the beach during low tide. Cycling on the beach was definitely a first for us. It can be a little tiring but it was a good exercise to burn off our heavy breakfast. Just need to take note of the tides and cycle back before the water creeps back.

    2. SO Sofitel Hua Hin Resort – Swimming & Soak To Your Hearts Desire

The resort has three swimming pools, each with a unique design and atmosphere. The Beach Pool, located just steps away from the beach, offers stunning views of the Gulf of Thailand.

The Solarium Pool, situated on the rooftop of the resort, provides a peaceful and serene environment for guests to relax and unwind. Being an adult-only pool, it was a great place to chill out after a relaxing spa session.

The Signature Pool, located in the heart of the resort, is perfect for families with children. We saw families spending hours navigating their way around the 47M Wibit inflatable water pool adventure course running down the middle of the 16M X 60M watery playground.

    3. SO Sofitel Hua Hin Resort – Spa Treatments & Fitness

SO Sofitel Hua Hin’s award-winning SoSPA offers a variety of spa treatments, including massages, facials, and body scrubs. We reserved one of our afternoons for a pampering spa treatment.

We got to experience the quintessential spa experience combining Italian Modern Plant Chemistry™ skincare from Skin Regimen and ancient therapeutic arts with Asian wisdom products from YTSARA. The therapists are also highly trained to provide a rejuvenating and relaxing experience.

What sets their spa apart is that we got to choose our preferred scent and have our treatments in these unique futuristic pods with shimmering interior lights.

We felt as though we were having our blissful treatment right under the stars. It was a magical experience.

Folks who enjoy fitness activities can take advantage of the resort’s fully-equipped gym, which offers a variety of cardio and weight training equipment. The resort also offers yoga classes and beachfront fitness activities such as beach yoga and aqua aerobics.

    4. SO Sofitel Hua Hin Beach Resort – Access To World-class Golf Courses

SO Sofitel Hua Hin is located near several world-class golf courses, including the Banyan Golf Club and the Black Mountain Golf Club. If you love a gorgeous and challenging flight, the resort can arrange for you to play golf at these courses and provides transportation to and from the golf courses.

    5. SO Sofitel Hua Hin Resort – Wine & Dine

The resort offers several dining options which makes your stay wine and dine experience an attraction itself! The White Oven restaurant was our go-to restaurant for daily breakfast and it was seriously one of our highlights for the day!

Other than the usual American and Continental breakfast options,

the restaurant offered live stations that prepared Thai street food right before your eyes.

We also love the abundance of mango sticky rice and seasonal fruits to end the meal on a sweet note.

For lunch, White Oven serves authentic Thai cuisine if you are still hungry after the amazing breakfast.

At night, the restaurant transformed into a Thai BBQ and Hotpot paradise in the evening.

We had a relaxing evening whipping up a feast with fresh seafood, meats selection and locally sourced vegetables served with the dining sets.

We had our final night’s dinner at the Beach Society Restaurant.

Dining in the open air, right by the beach was so relaxing and romantic.

We enjoyed our cocktail and enjoyed the sea breeze while waiting for our food to arrive.

Serving an international menu, our lobster roll and burger were served right up! The food was delicious but the star of the dining experience was really the ambience and the restaurant’s ever-attentive staff. Make sure you reserve one of your evenings to dine at the beach!

    6. SO Sofitel Hua Hin Resort – Kids Activities

If you are coming with children, you can take advantage of the resort’s kids’ club, which offers a variety of activities for children, including arts and crafts, games, and movies. The resort also has a playground and a kids’ pool right in front of the signature pool. For aspiring young golfers, the resort also has a SO Wonderland 18-Hole Adventure Golf that will offer you hours of fun bonding with your little ones.

  • SO Sofitel Hua Hin: SO Perfect Family-friendly Beach Getaway

SO Sofitel Hua Hin: SO Perfect Family-friendly Beach Getaway

Located just 2.5 to 3 hours away from Bangkok, Hua Hin makes the perfect beach getaway for anyone who is looking to chill and relax after a hectic shopping spree in the Thai Capital. With its pristine white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and lush jungle backdrop, Hua Hin has something for everyone. For our recent long weekend getaway to Bangkok, we decided to weave in a relaxing getaway within a getaway at SO Sofitel Hua Hin. The resort promises a mix of quiet seclusion along Cha-Am Beach and offers an ‘Imaginative Escape’ concept that combines the destination’s upscale vibe with a playful luxury attitude exhibited by the White Rabbit from Wonderland that greeted us the moment we arrived.

The friendly resort staff quickly helped us with our luggage and we were guided up this impressive flight of stairs to the main lobby. It was such an impressive display of space. We were told that Hua Hin has long been the preferred seaside escape for Thai nobility since the 1920s, giving the region the air of an elegant coastal retreat. Home to two summer palaces – including the nearby Mrigadayavan Palace of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) consisting of sixteen beautiful teak buildings – the vibrant coastal town is famed for its long white-sand beaches, local seafood delicacies and colourful markets.

SO Sofitel Hua Hin – The Welcoming Lobby

We love the expansive, open-concept lobby. Donatien Carratier, a forward-thinking interior designer famed for creating deeply resonant environments in which vivid dreams blur with reality was the visionary behind SO Sofitel Hua Hin’s ‘Evolution of Life’ concept.

Drawing inspiration from the Grand Gallerie de l’Evolution natural history museum in Paris, he begins with the iconic animal statue that greeted us as the staff handled our check-in.

While serving our welcome drink, the staff shared that there are more wild animal sculptures around the reflecting pond as well as rabbits hiding throughout the resort, we can keep a look out for some of these surprises around every corner.

SO Sofitel Hua Hin – SO Lofty Pool Access

We were soon guided to our room and it was quite an interesting walk. Award-winning Thai architect Duangrit Bunnag created the resort’s original bold structure, featuring an interwoven maze of open courtyards and private pathways. The property’s geometric lines and solid shapes, are softened by a palette of naturally aged woods that blend with the beauty of the surrounding nature, creating an environment of contemporary tranquility.

For rooms, suites, and villas, Donatien developed two distinct room styles: SO Nature and SO Arty. SO Nature rooms showcase the simplicity and pure beauty of Mother Nature, providing a relaxing environment and featuring award-winning photographs by environmental artist Martin Hill of New Zealand. Inspired by contemporary French art, the SO Arty rooms are a bit more modern in design, painting the spaces with a dreamlike luxury and featuring the award-winning work of American photographer Lois Greenfield, known for her distinctive approach to capturing the human form in motion. We were staying at a SO Lofty Room that embraces the splendour of Mother Nature in SO Nature style. We loved the extra high ceilings that provided an extra comfort of space.

The room was equipped with a rainshower, MyBed™ with a sleep menu for a fabulous night’s sleep, the latest cutting-edge technology sound system, complimentary Wi-Fi and a complimentary in-room private bar as well as a comfortable day bed if you need to accommodate more than a couple.

I love the spacious round bath tub that was right in the centre of the room. Both of us were able to dip in comfortably.

Bath salts were also thoughtfully provided in case you forget to bring your bath bombs.

We are not sure if this rotatable wardrobe with an attached TV at its back is a signature piece in all of SO Sofitel hotels because we saw something similar at Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa. This means that we can turn the TV to face us when we are in the bathtub.

As we were on the first floor, our room opened out directly onto the private terrace furnished with a large round chaise lounge.

The best part of living on the ground floor, we literally have SO Sofitel Hua Hin Signature Pool right in our backyard!

SO Sofitel Hua Hin – Facilities & Activities

For me, SO Sofitel Hua Hin most iconic facility has to be its Signature Pool. You can spend hours of fun time navigating your way around the 47M Wibit inflatable water pool adventure course running down the middle of the 16M X 60M watery playground.

For folks with young kids, there is also a dedicated 5M X 5M shallow kid’s pool area on one end bordered by SO Sundae poolside ice cream and snack bar to ensure a splashtastic time for all. SO Sundae was also where we got our cakes as we binge watch the latest drama on our streaming services.

Besides the Signature Pool, there is also the SO Pool by the Beachfront as well as the Solarium Pool right outside SO Spa. If you want some quiet time away from children, this is the perfect spot for you.

If you are here with children, SO Wonderland 18-Hole Adventure Golf will offer hours of fun bonding with your little ones.

At SO/ SPA, we got to experience the quintessential spa experience combining Italian Modern Plant Chemistry™ skincare from Skin Regimen and ancient therapeutic arts with Asian wisdom products from YTSARA. It was amazing having a massage right beneath the stars. We will share more in our next post on things to do at the resort. For fitness enthusiasts, you can check out SO/ FIT, a  compact fitness centre with state-of-the-art equipment from Technogym located next to SO/ SPA.

SO Sofitel Hua Hin – Wine & Dine

Designed around its eponymous white oven, White Oven was where we had most of our meals.

The breakfast was amazing with the usual international buffet spread,

local Thai breakfast favourites as well as

all-you-can-eat mango sticky rice and other desserts! This was definitely a major perk for us.

If you are still in need of a simple lunch after a sumptuous breakfast buffet, they serve quality Western and Thai dishes as well. At night, the restaurant transforms into a Thai BBQ and Hotpot Place!

For the 2nd night of our stay, we went for a beachfront dinner at Beach Society.

With open-air seating steps from the sea, gentle breezes and stunning views over the Gulf of Thailand, dining here was quite a magical experience – the perfect dinner to end our two nights stay at SO Sofitel Hua Hin.

SO Sofitel Hua Hin – It’s Our Perfect Getaway Within A Getaway!

Bangkok is still one of our favourite cities to visit but it has the tendency to develop into a rather hectic getaway as we strive to maximise our retail pleasures from the malls, markets and night bazaars. Throwing in a few days of relaxing and pampering side trip can help us detox from the crazy sprees and intense urban built-up areas. We really enjoyed our stay at SO Sofitel Hua Hin, it was our perfect getaway within a getaway.

The resort is extremely family-friendly and most of its guests were local Thais. We were probably one of the few foreigners around, in fact, many of the staff spoke to us in Thai when we first approach them. We hope you find our brief review of the resort useful. We were also surprised at the wide range of things we can do within the resort and around its immediate area, we will share our findings in the coming blog post. Stay tuned!
