KARA Café & Dessert Bar Introduces Traditional Breakfast Favourites

KARA Café & Dessert Bar at Bukit Timah, known for its popular Sogurt self-served frozen yogurt and iconic dishes like its Pork Belly Miso grain bowl and Matcha Berry Mochi Waffles, has just launched a breakfast menu for the first time. Founder Lee Li Ping, together with her family who owns and runs the café, had thought of including a breakfast menu earlier in the year in view of the limited morning options to get high-quality food at affordable prices around the neighbourhood.

Unfortunately, their plans were put on hold when Covid-19 struck and impacted restaurant operations across the island. As the situation eased in Singapore and businesses reopened, Li Ping was once again inspired to launch her very own version of familiar breakfast favourites. More so with the travel restrictions and the increased demand for outings and meals in local food and beverage establishments.

“Despite the labour crunch for food and beverage establishments (exacerbated by Covid-19), I was compelled to speed up the launch, especially when it became harder for us to find an uncrowded place for our weekend family breakfasts. Sensing this could be a similar challenge for other families as well, I felt it would do good for us to open up our space and offer a hearty breakfast experience in a comfy and homey setting, where parents and children, and even grandparents, would feel at ease and welcomed in.”Lee Li Ping, Founder of KARA Café & Dessert Bar

With a growing clientele from all corners of the island beyond her west side regulars, Li Ping saw the demand in offering another morning stop for early birds and feed the frenzy of new customers ‘Rediscovering Singapore’, ready to explore neighbourhoods and food haunts outside their usual local perimeters. What more in the beautiful lush green neighbourhood of Bukit Timah!

She can now finally share her latest menu for orders in the comfort of her own café and recently expanded section on the second floor which used to be the private two-storey events loft space. The exclusive extended dining area can accommodate more people with ample room for social distancing yet still maintain an intimate community feel with its cosy seating and warm surroundings. Customers can enjoy their hearty meals in a bright sun-lit interior overlooking the tree-lined sidewalk through tall glassy windows.

Kara Cafe & Dessert Bar – Breakfast Favourites Re-imagined

The breakfast menu features savoury and sweet traditional morning favourites deliciously re-imagined in delightful ways. The same creative flair and surprising combinations now synonymous with KARA’s food were used to magically put together a novel breakfast menu immersed in an ethnic mix of cultures from Malay to American influence.

The savoury selection consists of six items, carefully curated and integrated to bring out the best tastes, drawing the essence from ingredients across cultures.

The Nasi Lemak Sandwich will kick-off any spice lover’s day with its crispy fried chicken slathered with homemade sambal. Topped with coconut flakes, cucumber pickles, and a soft-boiled egg between fluffy buttered buns, this sandwich will set your tongue on fire.

With a blend of Malay and Mexican infusion, the Curry Chicken Quesadilla satisfies both cultures cravings in one. Filled with succulent curry chicken chunks and cheese, this toasted tortilla is served with a sour cream cucumber salad. An unthinkable combo that will titillate your tastebuds.

Another fiery Asian-inspired item is the Dakgalbi Baked Eggs, a pair of eggs poached in a spicy Korean style chicken stew served with crispy sourdough. Not your typical breakfast style of eggs, this dish will give you the wake-up boost you need.

Moving to more familiar breakfast grounds, it would not be complete without the good ol’ American big breakfast. KARA’s Big Brekkie Waffle Plate will fill your longing to visit a diner in the US with its rendition of the all-time favourite with corn waffles, grilled sausage, crispy bacon, sautéed mushroom, soft scrambled eggs, and roasted tomato with a side of healthy greens. A winner not just by popular vote.

Also a staple in most breakfast menus these days is the avocado toast. KARA’s version is given a face-lift with its Avocado Open Face Sandwich. Sourdough bread is crisped to perfection and smothered with melted cheese and avocado. Topped with a fried sunny-side-up egg and sprinkling of kale chips, this would be the new go-to-avo toast in town.

Take a whiff of some Italian and French influence with the Truffle Shroom Pesto Toastie. Loaded with kale cashew pesto, mushrooms, and gooey melted brie, served with a side of truffle sauce, it is impossible not to inhale this in a few minutes.

The sweet selection consists of three items, each highly representative of their country of origin, beautifully fused to re-create drool-worthy tastes and textures.

Ranked high in traditional Singaporean breakfast foods is the kaya toast. It is the epitome of simple slices toasted and topped right. KARA’s Kaya Butter French Toast ups the ante with fragrant pandan bread dusted generously with toasted coconut flakes, capped with seasonal fresh fruits and edible flowers. You will not bite into any other or look at kaya toast the same after this.

More than just another French toast, the Ricotta French Toast with Seasonal Fruits is made of sourdough bread, spread with luscious creamy ricotta cheese, scattered with candied walnuts, edible flowers and fruits in season, drizzled with 100% raw honey. It is no doubt très délicieux.

Giving a twist to a perennial American favourite, the PB & J (Peanut Butter & Jelly) sandwich, KARA has its take with the P.B Banana & Honey Toasties doused in 100% raw honey, sprinkled with sea salt, chia seeds and candied walnuts. A healthier but no less tasty version to keep coming back for.

Each item is beautifully presented like colourful edible art, captivating masterpieces too pretty to eat. Customers will unwittingly practice mindful eating in absorbing the picturesque sight before tucking into the mouthwatering flavours.
