12 Must Eat Thai Street Food When Visiting Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok is not just a shopping paradise for ladies. The Thai Capital is also famous for its amazing delicacies both in restaurants and on the streets. First time tourist to Bangkok would probably be overwhelmed by the vast selection and it may be quite a feat to try out all these delicious street food over the two or three days when are in the city. To help you on your Bangkok street food adventure, here are our recommendation of the 12 Must Eat Street Food when visiting Bangkok, Thailand.

    1. Crispy Pancake (Kanom Bueang)

This is really one of the very first street food we had when we visited Bangkok for the very first time! Kanom Bueang is a small, thin piece of crispy snack for the locals, just sufficient to satisfy your cravings for something sweet to munch without feeling too full. There are variations to this crispy pancake as they come in sweet or savoury fillings/toppings such as shredded coconut, chopped scallions or fried eggs / egg yolks.

Eat It At: MBK Mall Level 4, Talad Rot Fai Srinakarin & Asiatique

    2. Sweet Potato Balls (Kanom Kai Nok Krata)

Kanom Kai Nok Krata is a Thai street food that is a cross between a dessert and a snack. Khai Nok Krata means quail’s egg because they are of similar size. The main ingredients are sweet potatoes and tapioca starch, mixed well and deep fried until have golden brown colour.

Eat It At: Pratunam Night Market, Night Market outside Central World & Silom Night Market

    3. Pandan Sweetmeat / Kueh (Kanom Krok Bai Toey)

Kanom Krok Bai Toey in Bangkok is made by roasting it over a cast iron griddle called kanom krok, which is placed on top of burning hot coals. Made with flour, coconut sugar, and pandan leaf extract (which gives off a bright green colour and a heavenly aroma), this street snack has a chewy and fluffy texture and we love that it is not overly sweet. It makes the perfect snack while roaming the streets of Bangkok.

Eat It At: Train Market Ratchada (Ratchadaphisek Road, Dindaeng); Wang Lang Market (Soi Wang Lang, Siriraj); and Siam Pandan (Pathum Wan, Bangkok – besides Novotel Siam Square).

    4. Thai Style Fried Chicken (Gai Tod)

We adore Gai Tod! Folks who have tried it before swear that it is better than your usual fast food restaurants! When you are in Bangkok, just throw your diet out of the window and go for one more piece!

Eat It At: Pratunam Night Market, Night Market outside Central World, Silom Night Market.

    5. Thai Grilled Pork On Skewers (Moo Ping)

Thai Grilled Pork on Skewers are amazing because the Thai people still stick to the traditional ways of using charcoal to cook this dish. You get sweet, succulent and tender piece of pork served on a stick and delivered with dried chilli dipping sauce, one of the common accompaniments. Moo Ping Hea Owen is a stall that is recommended by the locals but there are other good options around the Pratunam area.

Eat It At: Silom Soi Convent, Central Embassy or Pratunam Night Market.

    6. Grilled Honey Roast Pork (Moo Yang)

Should it surprise anyone that pork neck or collar is one of the favourite cuts among the Thai? Blessed with just the right amount of lean meat, muscle, and fat, a well marinated Grilled Honey Roast Pork is so flavorful that everyone will find it hard to resist reaching out for another piece. The locals recommend Moo Yang Nam Peung at Chatuchak Weekend Market but we feel that these sweet succulent meats can be found at most night markets.

Eat It At: Moo Yang Nam Peung, Chatuchak Weekend Market, Area 22, Soi 4.

    7. Thai Fried Noodles (Pad Thai)

Pad Thai is probably the global ambassador for Thai cuisine. These simple stir-fried rice noodles are almost certainly one of the best-known Thai dishes worldwide. Many Thai folks would probably tell you that if the kitchen gets their Pad Thai right, they probably know their stuff. We recommend going to Pad Thai Sala Daeng or Thip Samai Pad Thai to sample this dish but you can find it at any Thai restaurants or night markets.

Eat It At: Pad Thai Sala Daeng  (Silom, Sala Daeng Soi 2), Thip Samai Pad Thai & most night markets

    8. Tom Yum Goong Noodles

Tom Yum Goong is Thailand’s official national noodle soup. You can probably find this dish at any Thai restaurants and night market but the many say that the best can be found at Pee Aor. So it really depends on how far you are prepared to go hunting down the perfect Tom Yum Goong Noodles.

Eat It At: Pee Aor, 68/51 Soi Phetchaburi 5 or any restaurants & night market street stalls.

    9. Boat Noodles (Kway Teow Rua)

These noodles used to be only found at the floating markets of Thailand but they have since ventured ashore. The noodles contain both pork and beef, as well as dark soy sauce, pickled bean curd and some other spices, and is normally served with meatballs and pig’s liver. Sutyot Kuetiau Lua Payak at Victory Monument is where locals will recommend if you are looking for authentic, delicious Boat Noodles.

Eat It At: Sutyot Kuetiau Lua Payak, Victory Monument

    10. Thai Duck Rice / Noodles

Duck Rice / Noodles can be found everywhere in Bangkok. However, the locals will point you to Kway Teow Pead Yang Balampoo. The herbal clear duck soup was made with more than 10 herbs and is the perfect complement to the roast duck. You should try their braised duck wings when you are there too!

Eat It At: Kway Teow Pead Yang Balampoo and other night markets

    11. Braised Pork Trotter Rice / Wanton Noodles

Braised Pork Trotters Rice and Wanton Noodles are so well-loved by Singaporeans that everyone must die-die have one whenever they visit Bangkok. You can opt for an individual portion of rice topped with tender braised pork leg and garnishing or you can also take on the ultimate Thai braised pork leg experience by ordering the entire leg.

Eat It At: Pratunam, Silom night market

A post shared by Yi Tan (@yipinglovewen) on

    12. Fried Banana Pancake (Roti Gluay)

We put this as our last item because we see it as one of the best street desserts to end a delicious evening. Similar to our familiar roti prata, this pan-fried dough dish is topped with condensed milk and a variety of options as honey, nutella, chocolate, coconut, sugar and much more – depending on your preference. It looks as good as it tastes, sinful to the max!

Eat It At: Pratunam Night Market, Khao San, Silom Night Market.

We hope you like our introduction of 12 Must Eat Thai Street Food in Bangkok. As you hunt down these street food, do note that many of these street food stalls move around different spots hence they may not be available at the same place the very next day. We would love it if you can share your personal experience in the comments section below too!

  • Laying Over in Bangkok – What to Do & Where to Eat

Laying Over in Bangkok – What to Do & Where to Eat

Bangkok is the largest city in Thailand by far, with several million more inhabitants than the entire nation-state of Singapore. It’s a dynamic place that’s always on the move. Thanks to its fortuitous location at the head of the Gulf of Thailand, Bangkok is also a major hub for international air travel. If you’re heading from Singapore to points farther north in Asia or making connections to Europe or North America, you may well lay over at BKK in the near future.

On longer layovers — say, six hours or more — you’ll have time to leave the airport and explore the city. Here’s how to ensure your time in Bangkok is successful.

First Things: Planning for a Successful Layover

Before you arrive, plan for a successful layover by:

    • Setting Aside Funds for a Memorable Day (And Ensure You’ll Have Access). Make sure your travel budget has room for a memorable day in Bangkok, particularly if you plan to eat at one of the fine restaurants listed below. If you’re not sure your bank can accommodate, consider switching to a financial partner that does business throughout the Asia Pacific region, such as a Singapore based trust and corporate services provider.
    • Evaluating Local Guide Options. Bangkok is a bit rougher around the edges than Singapore, and many of its top sights are off the beaten path. Consider hiring a local guide to show you around.
    • Packing a Day Bag. This should include all the essentials you’ll need on a day of sightseeing. Make sure it’s lightweight and fits inside your carry-on (or is your carry-on).
    • Becoming Familiar With Local Transportation and Transit. If you don’t plan to hire a local guide, become familiar with Bangkok’s road and transit systems. The best way to get into the city from the airport is the modern Skytrain, an elevated rapid transit line. Once downtown, you can walk or taxi to where you need to go.

Sights to See on Your Bangkok Layover

Don’t miss these world-class sights on your Bangkok layover:

    • Lumpini Park. This is the crown jewel of Bangkok’s park system — perfect for a morning or evening stroll.
    • Grand Palace. Words can’t do this place justice. You must see the historic Thai royal court for yourself.
    • Wat Pho. Not far from the Grand Palace is Wat Pho, arguably the city’s most extravagant temple. Remember to dress modestly (full-length trousers or dresses) as is custom.
    • Wat Arun. The so-called Temple of the Dawn, on the far side of the Chao Praya River, is well worth the journey. Again, remember the dress code (that’s what your day bag is for).
    • Khaosan Road. If you’d like to experience Bangkok’s slightly seedy underside in safety and comfort, this is the place to visit. You’ll find amazing deals on tailored clothing and high-end luggage here, too.
    • Chatuchak Market. Seeking more bargains? If you’re around at the weekend, hit Chatuchak Market, on the city’s north side.

Where to Eat on Your Bangkok Layover

Bangkok is renowned for fantastic street food. If all you crave is a perfectly spiced noodle plate finished off with a decadent bowl of mango sticky rice, you’ll barely have to look — both Khaosan Road and Chatuchak Market have dozens of vendors selling one or both, as do most other main thoroughfares and tourist districts in Bangkok.

If you’re seeking a more memorable culinary experience, consider:

    • Housed at the COMO Metropolitans Bangkok Hotel, Nahm serves Thai and global fusion dishes in a refined but unstuffy atmosphere. The tasting menu is one of the best bargains in town.
    • Lan. Bo.Lan is a farm-to-table homage to traditional Thai cooking — and decor, set as it is in a lovingly renovated old home.
    • This hotspot for “progressive Indian cuisine” ranks among the best restaurants in Asia, and it’s not hard to see why. Just be prepared to eat: The 25-course (give or take) tasting menu satisfies even the most gargantuan appetites.
    • Err is a lower-key establishment best described as “street food, elevated.” Come for the unpretentious atmosphere (complete with mismatched furniture) and stay for the unforgettable takes on Thai classics.

Make the Most of Your Time in Bangkok

There’s plenty more to do in Bangkok, of course, even if you have just 12 hours to do it in. Wherever you go and whatever you happen to see and experience in Thailand’s capital city, resolve to make the most of it. Who knows when you’ll be here again?

Open Door Policy Launches New Gluten & Dairy Free Cafe Menu

Tiong Bahru’s favourite neighbourhood bistro Open Door Policy will tug your heartstrings again with an honest and rustic makeover of its 100 percent gluten-free and dairy-free (GFDF) concept. Under Assistant Head Chef Freddy Ang, The menu revamp introduces 15 new dishes to the a la carte menu – each paying careful consideration to ODP’s inclination for hearty, wholesome cooking that aims to evoke a sense of nostalgia by imparting familiar flavours with a GFDF twist.

“These dishes may seem simple at first, but there is a good deal of unique execution, substitute ingredients, and months of research on alternative food sources that went into ensuring that we continue to do the GFDF movement justice,” shares Freddy, who has been working tirelessly with his team on his first foray into developing a brand new menu.

    Priming the palate

Perfect for sharing, the new starters whet the appetite with bold, deliberate flavours that prime the palate for what’s to come. Tummy-warming goodness comes in the form of two new soups – a Warm Wasabi Greenpea Scallop Soup (S$23++) that wraps a duet of lightly-seared Hokkaido scallops in a luscious, wasabi-tinged green pea broth; and a velvety Watercress Soup (S$18++) that flaunts flavours seemingly more grown-up in comparison, served with a sous-vide egg and pops of sweet wolfberries.

The Vitel Toné (S$25++), Chef Freddy’s take on the elegant summertime antipasto, features cold-cuts of buttery sous vide veal loin, accompanied with creamy tuna mayonnaise and pickled purple cabbage. All these delivered on the perfect vessel of GFDF fried bread.

Sharing a similar density is the zesty Avocado Jumbo Rump Crab Salad (S$25++) and its crunchy counterparts – crispy green kale, sweet corn kernels, salted egg yolk crumble, and fried charcoal bread.

    Rustic renditions

Firmly anchored in the bistro’s signature style of comfort cooking, the mains demonstrate Chef Freddy’s knack for serving up familiar flavours in rustic renditions. Seemingly simple, the Spaghetti Alle Vongole (S$28++) is tossed in a white miso sauce that is as dreamy as it is creamy. A remake of a dish from the previous menu, the Braised Veal Ossobucco (S$32++) makes a fork-tender encore on a bed of green pea risotto; its richness tamed with drizzles of preserved lemon and pickled purple baby carrots.

    Ocean-fresh flavours rise to the occasion with a Pan-seared Threadfin (S$32++), its buttery flesh juxtaposed with a sweet and spicy Thai mango salad that’s tossed with cashew nuts and crunchy Sakura shrimps;

and a Sous-vide Salmon (S$32++) soaked in a light yet flavourful miso chilli broth that echoes throughout the dish.

Satiate your meat hankering with a Roasted Pork Rack (S$38++) that’s steeped in a five-spice marinate, making for the perfect roast. A spicy pineapple sauce glazes the pork with a rounded tartness, while baked purple sweet potatoes and blanched broccolini lend a well-deserved crunch to the dish.

    Sweet redemptions

    End your meal on a zesty zing with the Calamansi Chocolate Tart (S$16++), a classic citrus meringue encased in a crusty no-bake cocoa shell;

or a velvety Cashew Nut Milk Custard (S$16++) coupled with fruity bursts of kiwi compote.

Old-timers will find a familiar favourite in the Dairy-Free Apple Crumble (S$16++), revived from its former eight-spiced glory with a crunchy oat-based crumble, lathered in a blanket of cashew milk crème anglaise.
