  • DBS Marina Regatta Dazzles With First Ever Light Drone Performance In Asia

DBS Marina Regatta Dazzles With First Ever Light Drone Performance In Asia

DBS Marina Regatta will dazzle Singapore with yet another first-of-its-kind experience on 4 June evening. As the grand finale to the DBS Marina Regatta 2017, DBS will partner Intel to bring to audiences at the Marina Bay a tightly choreographed mass drone display that celebrates the fusion of technology and artistry. As the first Intel® Shooting Star™ drone fleet public performance in Asia, 50 drones will light up the skies in front of the Marina Bay Promontory in a three-minute performance at 8.15pm on 4 June 2017.

Steered in dynamic formations, these 50 drones will present different shapes and colours to showcase a bespoke animation designed specifically for DBS Marina Regatta 2017. Dancing in mid-air to a specially commissioned musical piece by Singaporean composer and music producer, Eric Wong, the show promises to awe with stunning precision and finesse. These drones also recently made headlines around the world and went viral on social media after they were deployed in Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl Halftime performance in the US earlier this year.

Compared to traditional fireworks, these drones are purpose built for light shows and are inherently environmentally friendly. Made of flexible plastic and foam, the drones weigh about 11 ounces and the propellers are covered by protective cages. Each drone is also equipped with built-in LED lights that can create over 4 billion colour combinations. Just one pilot is required to control the entire fleet of drones.

This year’s regatta will also bring you the following first-of-its-kind experiences:

    1. SEA’s Largest Ever Pop-up Urban Beach

Hailed as SEA’s largest Pop-up Urban Beach, it is twice the size of last year’s urban beach at over 21,000 sq ft – or the size of 1.5 Olympic pools and can fit up to 2,000 people!

Bali beach club Potato Head will be feeding beachgoers with their legendary Coconut Bar here for the first time, complete with their signature uber fresh coconut cocktails and beers. You must get some of Three Buns’ gourmet burgers to complement your drinks!

    2. SG’s largest inflatable water obstacle course – Battle Bay

Challengers will have to navigate their way through rope swings, monkey bars, balance blocks and walls. The 9 obstacles course will test their agility, speed and strength. Up for grabs is SGD 8,000 in prize money for the fastest individuals and teams. The best team and individual will also win a trip to Beijing.

    3. SG’s biggest pop-up interactive art experience, Bay Dome

At 7.5 metres tall, take in Singapore’s largest pop-up interactive art experience where you can customise your own artwork and watch it come to life within the dome.

    4. Bay Eats– Offerings from Singapore’s top young chefs

The Local People returns to DBS Marina Regatta 2017 as curators of the food village. Weave through award-winning food stalls to sample food from top new eateries in town such as the “Neo-Sin” restaurant Labyrinth, French eatery Garçons, The BellJar, Leng Leng ice cream and more.

    5. Play Dome – Play in the day, party at night

Standing at an epic nine metres tall, the Play Dome is the spot to be from day to night with lululemon athletica and Ultra Music Festival. Work on your stamina with free lululemon-curated classes by Yoga+, WeBarre and Eat Train Love!

At night, party hard at the DBSMR X Ultra Countdown Party which takes place exclusively at the regatta from 7pm to 10pm on Friday and Saturday evening (2 & 3 June). Featuring three Ultra Music Festival deejays each night such as Dubvision, Crossnaders, Raiden, Jade Rasif, Moe and Myrne.

(For 18 years and above. Charges are SGD 15 per entry, inclusive of a free drink at the Play Dome bar. DBS Live Fresh cardholders get priority access)

In 2013, DBS committed a total of SGD 22 million to enlivening the Marina Bay area over six years. Since then, as part of the bank’s continuing efforts to bring the Bay to the people, and the people to the Bay, DBS-run and sponsored initiatives such as the DBS Marina Regatta, DBS Marina Bay Sailing Programme, POSB PAssion Run for Kids, and its other complimentary cycling and yoga activities have attracted more than 500,000 to the Bay – transforming Marina Bay into a bustling hub of activity.

  • First Ever Peranakan Festival Launch at Orchard Singapore

First Ever Peranakan Festival Launch at Orchard Singapore

For the first time ever, Peranakan Festival which runs over four weekends (27 – 28 May, 3 – 4 June, 10 – 11 June & 17 June) from 11am to 6pm will be held at Claymore Connect in Orchard Road Singapore. You will have the chance to immerse yourself into the fascinating world of the Straits Chinese community and be entertained by performances, art and craft workshops, exhibitions and cooking classes! That is not all, you will also get to savour a sumptuous high tea at Claymore Connect and The Peranakan Restaurant like a true blue Peranakan!

These Joget Joget weekends highlight the Peranakan love for dancing. At the festival, you will get to watch Dondang Sayang, a traditional love ballad performance which Baba and Nonya singers engage in a witty, humorous exchange of Malay pantun (poetry).

Food lovers will be delighted by the showcase and free sampling of traditional desserts, cookies, sireh and betel nut. Folks who are keen on whipping up a Peranakan fare can sign up for cooking workshops which come with a personalised certificate and a recipe card for just $50. You will get to learn the secrets behind the hard-to-find Nasi Ulam, a delectable rice salad of raw herbs and vegetables, fried fish and salted fish, that have to be finely julienned and minced and takes hours to prepare.

One of the most popular item in the month-long programme would be the weekend Peranakan Joget Joget High Tea at The Peranakan Restaurant, where local favourites like mee siam, kueh pi tee and nasi ulam accompanied by Malacca kopi-o and Malacca milk tea will be served.

Your little ones are not forgotten. They can get into the Peranakan art and craft workshops like stamp carving, silk screen printing and book cover art, where they will be guided to create a Peranakan-inspired composition. There will also be a demonstration on how to make Bunga Rampai, a potpourri of fresh pandan leaves and flowers, traditionally used on special occasions.

There will also be exhibitions of Peranakan culture and art which highlight the community’s heritage. One of which is the game of cherki played by Nyonyas in the past. This popular card game, which originated from Malacca, was usually accompanied by gossip around the table, swapping recipes and chewing betel nut.

Show reels of Peranakans of yesteryear will be used to form a visual backdrop to the event. You and your loved ones can have fun dressing up in Nonya or Baba traditional costume and taking their photo in front of different photo walls around the mall. Traditional kebayas can be rented at just $30 for the photo opportunity. There is also a set of spectacular traditional wedding garments for rental for photo-taking opportunities. Folks who would like to own a piece of intricate Peranakan costume, specially designed kebayas, sarongs, kerosang (brooches) and kasut manek (beaded slippers) are available for sale during the festival.

Take home some Peranakan flavour by picking up nonya kueh chang, traditional cookies, furniture, porcelain and batik tablecloths. You may also purchase crystal glassware, sarong kebayas and antique furniture originally used in Peranakan households in the 1920s.

Besides merry making, the festival is also committed to including those who are less privileged. On Saturday, 3 June, the second weekend of the festival, 100 elderly folks and 35 children from Redhill neighbourhood Lengkong Bahru will be invited to visit the festival and enjoy high tea at The Peranakan Restaurant. This effort is in conjunction with volunteer group saturdays@lengkongbahru . On 4 June (Sunday), 100 beneficiaries from Prison Fellowship Singapore will also be hosted for high tea.

  • JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Wows With Bill Bensley Design

JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Wows With Bill Bensley Design

Few names carry more cachet than Bill Bensley’s when it comes to resort design in Asia. Dubbed as the “king of exotic luxury resorts” by TIME Magazine, Bensley has an impressive portfolio of hotel properties that are unconventional and theatrical with an impeccable attention to detail. Bensley’s latest project, JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, continues to build on his already impressive legacy with a property that delivers enriching experiences and intuitive service that every JW Marriott guest comes to expect.

JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay’s design narrative was developed around the concept of a mythical academy of learning, honouring French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck who laid the groundwork for Darwin’s theory of evolution.

The JW Marriott brand is globally renowned for its intuitive service and commitment to providing guests with truly enriching luxurious experiences and the partnership with Bill Bensley complements the designer’s philosophy of creating hotels that demonstrate his passion for learning. His vision is for JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay to become a destination where guests leave inspired.

“Many people consider university to be the most memorable time of their lives,” says Bill Bensley, chief architect and designer of JW Marriott Phu Quoc. “I’ve always wanted to create a resort with this theme because of the profound influence my university studies had on my work. The scale of this project, together with the spectacular setting, gave me the perfect opportunity to bring the story of Lamarck University to life ensuring that guests leave richer than when they arrive, a core expectation for JW Marriott guests.”

Overseeing the master planning and design of the entire property, Bensley separated the enormous site into different zones, all of them connected via the Rue de Lamarck, the main street that extends through the whole resort. The JW Marriott Phu Quoc buildings reflect early 20th Century style and embrace the traditions of French colonial architecture.

Every detail, down to the decorative elements and associates’ uniforms, have been carefully crafted and considered by Bensley to reinforce the resort’s overarching theme. The Phu Quoc Ridgeback, a native dog breed, is the mascot of the hotel and design details reflecting the mascot can be seen in various areas of the property.

The 244 guestrooms, suites and villas are spread throughout different wings, giving guests the experience of being in their own dedicated section of the resort. Playing on the concept of academia, the accommodation wings are named after different academic departments. Taking full advantage of the idyllic views, all rooms and suites are ocean-facing and include a spacious balcony with sofa seating. Guests staying on the ground level will also have their own private garden and direct access to the three swimming pools of the resort.

Complementing the emerald-colored sea and the lush surrounding landscape, Bensley has picked a palate of warming reds, turquoise, blues and greens for the interiors. Custom-designed furnishings in dark timber and patterned flooring further elevate the sense of comfort and luxury in the rooms, and throughout the resort’s walkway.

Along Rue de Lamarck, traditional shophouses built to resemble the ancient streets of Hoi An highlight a unique blend of Chinese, Japanese and Western architectural influences offering visitors an authentic sense of place. Visitors can stroll the street to find the most exquisite artisanal boutiques, the resort’s varied dining outlets and one of the best spas on Phu Quoc island.

The French have long believed the therapeutic qualities of mushrooms. Playing on this idea, the designer has created an unusual guest experience in Chanterelle – Spa by JW by incorporating references from Alice in Wonderland where mushrooms played a key role. Mushroom-shaped furnishings and hand-painted walls of flora and fauna can be spotted throughout, while framed biological illustrations of mushrooms adorn the interior ceilings, adding to the fantastical and surreal quality of the space. Bensley also took inspiration from the childhood fable for a hidden corridor, where asymmetric arches curve at mirroring angles to create a layering effect, echoing Alice falling down the rabbit hole.

Enriching culinary experiences are at the heart of all JW Marriott hotels, and it’s no exception at JW Marriott Phu Quoc where Tempus Fugit, the all-day dining restaurant. French&Co., the hotel’s pâtisserie and gourmet deli, is reminiscent of a classic French café with its relaxing ambience and interior décor, including the cast iron oven and antique scales.

At Chemistry, the resort’s cocktail bar located by Emerald Bay, guests can relax on one of the swinging daybeds or lounge seats while sipping on signature concoctions by in-house “chemists.” Every detail in the bar was created with a chemistry lab in mind: serving counters are decorated with beakers and scientific instruments; the ceiling is designed with a periodic table and matched with a striking atom-shaped light. Red Rum, the beach grill, boasts a casual vibe in an open-air pavilion and features an intricate hanging chandelier crafted from hundreds of seashells. Finally, The Pink Pearl, housed inside a splendid 2-storey mansion, will be the resort’s beachfront fine dining Cantonese restaurant.

Bensley’s imaginative touch extends beyond the restaurant outlets into the meeting rooms and banqueting facilities. The property’s grand ballroom, named the Lamarck Auditorium, showcases a series of vintage atlases. Meanwhile, the separate meeting spaces each tell a unique, whimsical story such as The Artist, a meeting room inspired by Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings which incorporate a bold lighting fixture constructed from large paint brushes, showcases JW Marriott’s commitment to culture.

To add to the authenticity of the whimsical design, Bensley’s team traveled across Europe multiple times to source over 5,000 original antiques and furniture items for the resort. Guests can expect to discover vintage furniture, teaching paraphernalia, carpentry tools, prints and sketches showcasing the evolution of mankind and nature, as well as other hidden gems throughout the well-crafted and intuitively designed resort.

Shaped by natural beauty, pristine white sand beach and favourable weather year-round; Phu Quoc island is a hidden pearl off the beaten tourist track.  Located 45 kilometres off the southern coast of Vietnam, the island can be reached via a direct 40-minute flight from Ho Chi Minh City. The resort is a 15-minute drive from Phu Quoc International Airport. For more information, please visit the hotel website.

    Getting To Know Laos

Laos, the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia has its capital in Vientiane. With more than 236,000 square kilometres in area, the country has a population of just under 7 million. After the constitutional monarchy in 1976, Laos is one of the world’s last communist states and also one of the poorest countries in the world, relying heavily on aid.

Lowland Lao (Lao Loum) comprise approximately 70% of the population while upland Lao (Lao Theung) and highland Lao (Lao Soung) make up roughly 20% and 10% respectively. Chinese and Vietnamese are a small but economically significant portion of the population.

The national language used is Lao. It is a tonal language that is closely related to the Thai language, although the written scripts differ. English is the most spoken foreign language in the country.

Similar to its neighbours Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia, Laos is a predominately a Buddhist country. However, a significant 30% of the population, especially those in the highlands, follow animist beliefs.

    People & Culture

Lao people are generally frank and friendly. They treat everyone with kindness and respect and all who reciprocates in return will receive a warm welcome.

The generally accepted form of greeting among Lao people is the Nop. You can do it by placing your palms together in a praying position at your chest level. Note that your palms should not be touching your body. The higher the position of your hands, the greater the sign of respect for the recipient. However, your hands should not be held above the level of the nose. The nop is accompanied by a slight bow to show respect to persons of higher status and age. The nop is also used as an expression of thanks, regrets or simply saying goodbye. With foreigners, Laotians are generally ok to just shake hands.

The feet is considered the inferior part of the body (spiritually as well as physically). Hence, you must never touch or point to another person or object with your foot.

    Best Time To Visit

For the most part of the year, you should be expecting hot and humid weather. Laos enjoys a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. The rainy season starts from May and ends off during September while the dry season takes over from October to April.

If you are thinking of heading to Lowland Laos, November to January would be your best time to visit. This period is when the daytime temperatures are comfortably warm, evenings are slightly chilly and the countryside is green and lush after the rains. However, you should also note that at higher elevations temperatures are significantly cooler and can sometimes dropping to freezing point. In February, the temperatures start to climb. By April and May, the temperature will peak at a maximum of 38 degrees Celsius making the lowlands unbearably hot and humid.

A post shared by Laos Tourism (@laostourism) on

The highlands are, for the most part as hot as the lowlands. There are however spots such as Paksong on the Bolaven Plateau that enjoy a temperate climate year-round. Due to slash-and-burn agriculture, much of the north, including Luang Prabang, gets shrouded in smoke from March until the beginning of the monsoon, which is bad for your health and seriously affects your photography if that is your main focus.

The rainy season (May – September) have the tendency to make Laos’s unpaved roads almost impassable after the rains begin. However, they also allow rivers to rise to a level that makes boat transportation possible.

In its Capital – Vientiane, a minimum temperature of 19 degrees celsius is to be expected during January. In mountainous areas, however, the temperature drops to as low as 14-15 degrees celsius during the winter months, and during cold nights, it can easily reach the freezing point.

    Entry Into The Country

Unless you hold a passport from Japan or one of the ASEAN member states, you’ll need a visa to enter Laos. The good news is that you probably won’t need to arrange it in advance; thirty-day visas are now available on arrival at most international borders. Note that all visitors must hold a passport that is valid for at least six months from the time of entry into Laos.

Visas on arrival take just a few minutes to process, cost around $35, and are available to passengers flying into Luang Prabang Airport, Pakse Airport and Wattay Airport in Vientiane.

    Extending Your Stay

Visa extensions are fairly easy to obtain. However, you will need to plan ahead to avoid overstaying your visa as there is currently a $10 penalty for each extra day you spend in the country. The cheapest option is to visit the immigration office on Hatsady Road in Vientiane before your visa expires. Here, visa extensions are issued at the cost of $2 per day and the maximum length of an extension is fifteen days.

Alternatively, you can also choose to leave the country and enter again (which might work out cheaper if you’re planning to extend by twenty days or more) or pay a local travel agent to arrange the visa extension for you. Generally, this is more expensive, with most vendors charging around $4 per extra day required. Thirty-day business visas that have the potential to be extended can also be arranged in advance at the Lao embassies and consulates listed below.

    Currency & Exchange

The Kip is the official currency of the Lao PDR and the following banknotes are currently in circulation: 500; 1,000; 2,000; 5,000; 10,000; 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 Kip.

The best currencies to use when exchanging money are: US Dollars, Euros and Thai Baht. You can exchange your currency at the bank, airport, or at a foreign currency exchange office.
