Two Weeks In Singapore, Malaysia And Indonesia

It can be difficult to allocate your vacation days. Though even short vacations can provide the same benefits as more extended vacations (reduced stress, for example), being able to disconnect from work and daily responsibilities for two weeks may be just what the doctor ordered. Visiting Singapore, Malaysia or Indonesia during that time can be even more rewarding. If you want to take it a step further, you could hire a private charter flight to transport you. Here are the top three things to do at each destination to get your vacation started.

    Singapore

Gardens By the Bay – This is a popular tourist attraction in Singapore, and for a good reason. The variety of plants and the inventive ways they are displayed are breathtaking. The Cloud Forest replicates the cool-moist ecology of the tropical highlands in one section of the conservatory. It has a treetop walk and an indoor 114-foot waterfall that is frequently photographed.

Haji Lane – A narrow lane in the Bras Basah-Bugis neighbourhood lined with indie shops, hole-in-the-wall cafes, hip bars, and graffiti art. Haji Lane is the city’s original hipster hangout. It’s lined with vibrant shophouses occupied by independent boutiques selling one-of-a-kind items not found anywhere else in Singapore. Haji Lane, home to a slew of charming cafes and watering holes, comes alive in the evenings with people heading down to grab some grub and a drink, or two, for a laid-back night out with friends.

Marina Bay Waterfront – The Marina Bay Waterfront Promenade, as the name suggests, is a 3.5-kilometre walkway along the bay that connects many attractions at Marina Centre, Collyer Quay, and the Bayfront. The promenade is intended to be an environmentally friendly recreation area. There are mist sprays to cool visitors off in the sweltering Singapore heat and breeze shelters with motion sensor fans to provide a cool break from a tour walking around the bay.

    Malaysia

Petronas Towers – The PETRONAS Towers, also known as the PETRONAS Twin Towers because they come in a pair, are the tallest twin towers in the world and are located in the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur. The architecture is postmodern in style and incorporates motifs from Islamic art to represent Malaysia’s Muslim majority.

Cameron Highlands – These elevations range from 1300m to 1829m and offer many hikes, strawberry plantations, and souvenir stalls. Sipping a bronze-hued cup of tea while gazing out at the rippling carpet of tea plantations is the quintessential Cameron experience.

Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre – It’s not every day that you can get up close and personal with an orangutan or see these creatures in their natural habitat, so seize the moment. Yet, in Malaysian Borneo, you can do just that at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sabah. Visit it to see rescued and orphaned orangutans that are now safe from poachers. The rehabilitation centre provides this endangered species with a safe and healthy environment.

    Indonesia

Kuta Beach – Visit the famous Kuta beach in the south of Bali. The sea is protected by a sand bar and has gentle rolling waves that are ideal for beginners learning to surf. Surfing lessons are available by the hour, or visitors can rent a sponge board and ride the waves.

Borobudur – This ancient temple is a well-known and culturally significant landmark in Indonesia. Borobudur was built in the shape of a traditional Buddhist mandala in the eighth century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s most important Buddhist sites. The massive temple was forgotten for centuries after it is believed that much of the population relocated to eastern Java due to volcanic eruptions. However, it was rediscovered in the 1800s and is now one of Java’s main attractions.

Komodo National Park – The Unesco-protected Komodo National Park is the domain of Indonesia’s apex super-predators, the living dragons. Rinca Island (just east of Komodo) is one of the most exciting predator territories to visit, being smaller but more densely populated with particularly aggressive dragons. Only the Amazon has more natural diversity than Indonesia, and it is possible to combine dragons and orangutans in a single tour taking in some of the natural icons of the world’s second richest wildlife zones.

Colorful Asia ticks all the boxes for a top holiday destination, with some of the world’s oldest cultures, fascinating architecture, beautiful natural landscapes, delicious foods, and friendly locals. Asia is full of adventure, from fast-paced cities to breathtaking beaches. Each region is distinct, with cuisine, culture, and history as varied as the next.

  • The Prestige Hotel Penang – Luxury Stay In UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Prestige Hotel Penang – Luxury Stay In UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Prestige Hotel Penang is an independent bespoke luxury hotel that best portrays the natural urban beauty of Penang’s historic core. A modern-day interpretation of Victorian design, it welcomes the urbane traveller to a contemporized and magical quasi-colonial universe, carefully created and curated by Ministry of Design. The first of its kind in Penang, The Prestige Hotel is a destination in itself offering an authentic travel experience and is part of the prestigious Design Hotels™ portfolio.

The Prestige Hotel Penang – Nestled Within A UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Prestige Hotel Penang is located in the core zone of Georgetown, set amongst the beautiful and intricate 19th-century English colonial buildings found in this UNESCO World Heritage site. Tropical Victorian sounds like a misnomer when you think of England and her weather, but this is what the locals are blessed with in Penang.

Nestled along Church Street, The Prestige Hotel is a new-build, joining many beautiful and intricate Victorian buildings, which still house banking and commercial facilities, in a tropical climate where lush vegetation abounds. Uniquely one of a kind, the hotel draws upon the cultural relevance of its colonial past whilst showcasing the brilliant art of illusion etched in sophisticated architectural and design philosophies to deliver a distinctive hotel stay experience.

The hotel logo takes its reference from Victorian crests to recreate a modern family crest, in this case, also playing with optical illusion by using lines to suggest the presence of negative spaces. The 1st “P” refers to Prestige; the 2nd “P” hinges on the idea of seeing double yet also situates the hotel in Penang.

Located 25 minutes from Penang’s international airport and within walking distance to Penang’s famous cultural landmarks and popular gourmet hotspots, the hotel brings local inspiration to life and is the perfect launching point for intrepid business and leisure travellers seeking to experience local charm at its best.

Prestige Hotel Penang – Visual Animation & Trickery: Smoke & Mirrors

The Prestige Hotel Penang features 162 rooms, an all-day dining restaurant, a rooftop infinity pool, events pavilion and terrace, and a vibrant Victorian dining and retail arcade.

At the Ground Floor drop-off, one subtle intervention to unify the Reception with the Glasshouse Restaurant and retail spaces is the black-and-white floor pattern, which seems to magically “appear and disappear” before your eyes. The Reception, Glasshouse Restaurant and retail spaces are designed as standalone stores, i.e. a shop-in-shop concept to break down the linear scale, resulting in a delightful check-in, eating and shopping area reminiscent of the historical English shopping arcade.

In the reception area, several tongue-in-cheek references to magical illusions were introduced. You can navigate a custom-designed white marble-clad maze with brass trimmings on the floor, to get to the reception. The custom reception desk made of mirrored stainless steel magically appears to balance on chrome spheres, and a cloud wainscot adorns the curved wall behind the reception desk, showing a modern whimsical take on Victorian interiors.

While the colonial Victorian heritage and tropics are key elements of the design concept, the studio considered a particularly difficult condition of the site, i.e. its long narrow proportions which potentially made navigating the hotel’s retail arcade or its long guestroom corridors a monotonous experience. To overcome this, elements of visual trickery and surprise, notions of magic and illusions were introduced with the end goal of creating delightful spaces and memorable experiences.

The Prestige Hotel Penang – Welcome To The Guest Rooms

There are 4 room types in total: the standard room named the Deluxe, the Premier Deluxe Suite, the Loft Suite (designed for travellers on longer business trips or couples, this suite features a generous lounge on the ground floor and a separate bedroom area on the mezzanine level), and a unique Deluxe Trio room which features a smaller bedroom for a child travelling with parents, for additional privacy.

A key feature in the Premier Deluxe Suite is the custom-designed Shower and Wardrobe Enclosure, crafted with champagne bronze-tinted metal and glass; a hero piece which takes aesthetic cues from the elaborate magic props used in performances such as Houdini’s escape box.

Besides featuring hidden pantries that are revealed behind the wainscot wall, the Loft Suite also features a custom-designed clock at the sofa area, which doubles up as a wall feature, making a fractal pattern out of the angular wainscot lines.

Named “The Prestige” to conjure brand imagery of elegance and sophistication, it also takes cues from the movie The Prestige starring Christian Bale, which was set in the Victorian era, (similar to the area’s context) about the illusory art of magic.

The Prestige Hotel Penang – Modern Victorian layered with Local Botany

The inspiration for The Glasshouse came from the English Victorian conservatory (a sunroom with glass walls and intricate wrought metal lattice patterns). The studio applied the lattice pattern to the metal-framed walls and glazing of the Glasshouse restaurant (seats 110 diners), presenting it as a delightful garden conservatory for breakfasts, lunches and dinners. A mix of real plants and tropical prints were used for the sofa cushions to add to the allure of being in a “Tropical Eden”.

The mirror, a ubiquitous tool for the magician, is deliberately used to clad the end walls to create the optical illusion of multiple rooms. Uniquely planned to be experienced in 2 zones, the Glasshouse offers a variety of seating areas, either on forest-green leather banquettes, facing the street for people-watching, or on white wicker chairs facing the lush landscaped alfresco areas at the back.

The Head Chef, Mr Shafiq Rizhar Rozali, formerly from Sheraton Hotel and China House (Penang), specializes in modernizing local favourites with international flavours. His recommended “must-haves” are: “Nyonya Ulam Rice”, featuring roasted chicken with local spices, salted egg, poppadum, cucumber, eggplant, anchovy crumb and chili shrimp paste on the side, and “Crispy Chicken Gochujang”, crispy deep-fried chicken with honey Gochujang paste, mashed potato, butter broccoli and scallions.

Taking the lift to the room levels on L2-3, and to the Event spaces on L4, is a confluence of modern Victorian layered with local botany. The lift lobby surprises with a champagne bronze-tinted feature wall with etched patterning inspired by Victorian grilles and a window portal which frames the lush plants outside.

In the lift car, the studio custom-designed a floor-to-ceiling polished tinted metal wall, graphically presenting the unique features of Penang in an aesthetic that is reminiscent of Victorian-like wallpaper. The graphic pattern comprises etched outlines of heritage buildings, famous landmarks (e.g. clock tower and statues) and the local botany of Penang (e.g. coconut trees, birds of paradise, hibiscus and Pinang palm trees.

The top floor, Level 4, houses a fully equipped gym, amidst chandeliers and mirrored ceiling panels to create the optical illusion of infinite space and a generous events area. Named after the lead characters in The Prestige movie, the Angier & Borden Function Rooms can host indoor events for 110 guests, and the Olivia & Julia outdoor gazebos feature lounge settings. The Angier & Borden Function Rooms feature mullions with fluted glass, providing privacy while maintaining light and porosity.

The infinity-edge rooftop pool is an excellent place to watch the sunset with a cocktail in hand, as it fronts Church Street Pier and overlooks the water. The studio not only designed the boundary walls and raised them, for greater privacy, it also designed landscaping to shield sunbathers from those having drinks at the gazebo lounge.

The Prestige Hotel Penang – Book Your Stay

Carefully created and curated by Ministry of Design, the hotel is a destination in itself. The studio is responsible for the holistic brand strategy, interior design, landscape design, signage design, installation art, and graphic design throughout the entire Prestige Hotel. • Lunar New Year Luck – 15 Things To Avoid During Chinese New Year

Lunar New Year Luck – 15 Things To Avoid During Chinese New Year

Whether you like it or not, Asians especially Chinese are a superstitious lot. If you are new to Asia and visiting your colleagues or friends during the Chinese New Year period, it is better for you to do some background read up before you get frowned upon. The new lunar year is viewed as a fresh start and it comes with a whole set of rules that you should not break unless you are looking for bad luck. To help you navigate your way through, here are 15 things not to do on Chinese New Year. Gong Xi Fa Cai and enjoy your visiting!

    1. Chinese New Year – Don’t Break Anything

As much as possible, try to avoid breaking anything during this period. If you happen to accidentally break a plate or two, wrap the remaining pieces of whatever you broke in red paper and leave them for five days, but also make sure to say the likes of “岁岁平安” to neutralise the whole situation (and the wrath of your parents). After a period of five days, you can then dispose of the broken items and buy new ones via jasa import china. Throwing out a dish on the first day would also classify as throwing out rubbish, and that symbolises losing wealth.

    2. Eat Poor? Prepared To Be Poor.

Traditionally, congee is a type of porridge that was eaten by the poor in China. The Chinese believe that if you take on the diet of the poor during the Chinese New Year period, you will have a year of poverty ahead of you. So it is important to feast and eat like the wealthy.

    3. Don’t Sleep Early On Chinese New Year Eve

You should stay up as late as possible on Chinese New Year Eve – the later you stay up, the longer their parents will live!

    4. The Number Shall Not Be Named

You should never utter the word (or rather a number) 4. It’s an unlucky number that is associated with death because it is nearly homophonous to the word “死” in Mandarin. Generally skipped in elevators in China (perhaps that’s the secret floor.), Level F is sometimes used instead. Unless you want a death stare from the elders, avoid using that number at all times during the Chinese New Year period.

    5. Chinese New Year – Black & White Is Bad Luck

In the Chinese culture, black and white are colours used during funeral wakes. During Chinese New Year, cast your black and white wardrobe aside and wear red. Red represents good fortune for Chinese but tradition is not far from facts.

    6. Shut Your Trap!

Don’t curse others or use words with negative connotations during Chinese New Year. If you say it, it might happen to you.

    7. Don’t Use Knives, Scissors or Sharp Objects

The use of knives, scissors or sharp objects is to be avoided. For any accident is thought to be an inauspicious omen and the depletion of wealth in the coming year.

    8. Don’t Owe Money!

Payback any money you owe to start your new year with a fresh financial status. If someone owes you money, do not go to his or her home to demand it during Chinese New Year. Anyone who does so it is said to experience bad luck for the entire year!

    9. Stop Sweeping Away Wealth

There is a reason why we have spring cleaning before Chinese New Year. Chinese believe that we are sweeping during Chinese New Year equates to sweeping away our wealth. While keeping your house clean is a good habit to have, let it go for the first 2 – 3 days of the Lunar New Year. Garbage must not be disposed of on the first day of the New Year too. It won’t really hurt, trust us.

    10. Chinese New Year – No Count For Odd Amount

Putting odd amount in red packets brings bad luck for both the giver and the receiver.

    11. Skip Hospital Visits.

Hospitals are associated with sickness and death. If you go during Chinese New Year, you are asking for a year of sickness for the whole family which may also happen because of all the germs and virus.

    12. Avoid Taking Medication.

It is a taboo to take medicine on the first day of the New Lunar Year as it will curse someone to be sick for an entire year. In some places, after crossing 12 midnight on New Year’s Eve, sickly people break their gallipots (medicine pots) in the belief that this custom will drive the illness away in the coming year.

    13. Don’t Wash Your Hair.

Your hair must not be washed on the first day of the Chinese New Year. In Mandarin, hair (发) is the same character and pronunciation as fa in facai (发财), which means ’to become wealthy’. Therefore, it is seen as not a good thing to “wash one’s fortune away” at the beginning of the New Year.

    14. No Washing Of Clothes

The reason behind not washing anything on the first two days of Chinese New Year is because it’s the birthday of a God. Water God to be precise. He actually enjoys a two days birthday, don’t upset the Water God as you don’t know what will happen.

    15. Chinese New Year – No Killing

Killing during Chinese New Year should be avoided as blood is considered an ill omen, which will cause misfortunes such as a knife wound, or a bloody disaster.

We hope you find our list of the 15 Chinese New Year things to avoid useful. It is there to help you avoid back luck and have an awesome Lunar New Year ahead.

80 years after the launch of white chocolate as the third natural chocolate flavour after dark and milk, ruby chocolate is now widely accepted as the 4th addition to the family of chocolate. The fresh berry-fruitiness and colour tone are naturally present in the ruby cocoa bean. No berry flavour nor colour has been added, delivering an intense sensorial delight to consumers.

Ruby chocolate, first announced to the world in late 2017 was discovered by the global R&D centres of Barry Callebaut in France and Belgium, which is part of its global network of the 28 research and development centres, together with Jacobs University in Germany. The birth of the chocolate is considered as an instrumental industry breakthrough.

When asked to elaborate more on the attractiveness of ruby chocolate for the Southeast Asian market, Mr. Choo Shuo-yen, Barry Callebaut’s Vice President of Sales for Food Manufacturers in Southeast Asia and Regional Marketing Asia Pacific said, “With a strong food heritage, today’s consumers, especially millennials, are highly sophisticated—savouring every nuance and demanding more from their food and drinks. Consumers are seeking unique sensory experiences and ready to indulge on innovative products such as ruby chocolate – to discover distinctive colours, taste, and flavours for every consumption occasion.”

Harriston’s ruby chocolate range comes in three variants: ruby chocolate bar, ruby chocolate thin strips and ruby chocolate coconut crunch bar. Harriston ruby chocolate bar will be sold at selected supermarkets and hypermarkets under the Harriston Artisan line alongside Harriston Artisan white, milk and dark chocolate bars, while its ruby chocolate thin strips and ruby chocolate coconut crunch bar will be available exclusively at Harriston stores under the Harriston Signature line.

According to Queenie Teng, Executive Director of Harriston, “We are very excited with the arrival of this new product of ours. It will come in many variants and we will do our utter best to introduce this long-awaited chocolate to Malaysians of all backgrounds and hopefully in the near future, the people of Southeast Asia. At the end of the day, we hope that the people will fall in love with this quality and berry fruity chocolate just like we did!”

All Harriston Signature products are available at both Harriston Signature and Harriston Boutique outlets. For more information, please log on www.harristonchocolate.com

For those who have yet to fall for the city’s beguiling charm, you are definitely in for a treat. The historic town bears undiscovered gems within its seemingly innocuous rows of shophouses and heritage buildings that dates back to its former years under colonial rule. Probably the most photographed place in Malacca, the Red Square is one of the most famous sights that date back to former Dutch rule in mid-1600s, making it a must to visit for tourists. The whole town is steeped in rich history, with many storefronts selling and displaying ancient antiquities which can be a meaningful keepsake for visitors. The slightly understated city belies the excitement and adventure that one can experience in Ipoh. The often overlooked destination should not be missed as the laidback city is dotted with spas and wellness centres, like the Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat, which is well-deserved after a long drive.
