90 Adorable Animals Sculptures Now At Cracking Art, Harbour City

In 2023, Harbour City opens its doors to more international art communities to satisfy all art lovers! The first art project partners with the renowned Italian Cracking Art group, who will host its first eco-public art exhibition in Hong Kong on their 30th anniversary. From 31 January to 28 February, over 90 animal sculptures made from regenerated plastic will be on display across 8 different locations in Harbour City, indoors and out, from Ocean Terminal Forecourt to Ocean Terminal Deck, Seaview Balcony in Ocean Centre and more. These vibrant installations certainly shine a light on the bustling shopping mall.

Placing eye-catching animal sculptures in busy international cities, Cracking Art aims to arouse people’s attention to the intense relationship between nature and artificial plastic through public art and inspire a community-wide conversation about the importance of recycling. What’s more, each design is conceived as a symbolic message about the species itself and our relationship with nature. For example, Beagle is the unfortunate dog breed which has been picked for animal testing; Penguin has been the great sufferer of global warming; while the Crocodile and Sea Turtle are two of the oldest creatures on Earth.

In addition to the unexpected encounters with Rabbit, Elephant, Penguin, Beagle, European Cat, Sea Turtle, Bear and Crocodile by Cracking Art in Harbour City, visitors are welcome to print the exclusive Personalised Photo Postcard and join the Eco-friendly Product Charity Redemption to raise funds for World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). All proceeds will be donated to support wildlife conservation and education work.

To continue the mission of Cracking Art Group of minimizing waste and reducing the environmental impact, the sculptures will be returned after the exhibition and will be displayed in other cities.

Combining art and environmental awareness – Cracking Art creates awe-inspiring artworks to draw public attention on environmental conservation

“Cracking Art” Public Art Exhibition is designed to stimulate fun interaction with visitors and highlight the increasingly close relationship between natural life and artificial reality, especially the use of plastic. Appearing in unexpected urban spaces, the brightly coloured animal sculptures made from regenerable plastic have always triggered a community-wide conversation about the importance of sustainability and environmental conservation.

Cracking Art artists have created 14 types of animal sculptures in their collection, with each species chosen for its strong symbolism. Eight of them are displayed in this exhibition, including

    • Beagle – the unfortunate dog breed which has been picked for animal testing
    • Penguin – the great sufferer of global warming
    • Crocodile and Sea Turtle – two of the oldest creatures on Earth
    • Rabbit – the metaphor of fecundity and productivity like plastic
    • European Cat – the highly adaptable animal to any environment and cohabitation
    • Bear – the ambivalent creature to humans, who love cute teddy bears yet fear wild bears
    • Elephant – the metaphor of memory, representing the importance of understanding history

  • Hop On To Hong Kong Luckiest Spots In The Year Of The Rabbit

Hop On To Hong Kong Luckiest Spots In The Year Of The Rabbit

Now that Asia’s World City is ready to welcome international visitors again, it’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate Chinese New Year in true Hong Kong style. After all, nowhere blends time-honoured CNY traditions with modern energy quite like this buzzing metropolis. In honour of the Year of the Rabbit, here are five of Hong Kong’s most fortuitous experiences to fill your year with good luck, health and prosperity.

    1. Take Instagrammable Photos with the ‘Lucky Rabbit’

As the traditional colour of CNY, red is believed to boost one’s fortune! Don a new lucky red T-shirt, a red cheongsam dress or a Tang suit, then head to Hong Kong’s festive displays to take epic shots for the Year of Rabbit.

Brought to you by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, a series of dazzling CNY checkpoints have transformed the harbourfront. For starters, a giant Lucky Rabbit is making its debut on the roof of the Central Pier. Visitors will also discover more hoppin’ displays – each with mesmerising themes, lights, music, and interactive elements – at Admiralty’s Tamar Park, the Wan Chai Temporary Promenade and Tsim Sha Tsui’s Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

    Fortune Around Hong Kong

    19 Jan – 5 Feb 2023 | Across Victoria Harbourfront

    2. Hop On Auspicious Harbour Tours

On the first day of CNY, it’s customary to usher in luck and prosperity by spending time outdoors. Visitors can embrace the tradition with a scenic Victoria Harbour cruise aboard a historic Star Ferry. Along the way, try to catch the Lucky Rabbit hiding on the ferry! Accrue more good fortune by exploring the CNY-themed harbourfront checkpoints in different ways, like a sightseeing tour on the antique Dukling junk boat or a pedal-boating adventure at the Wan Chai Water Sports and Recreation Precinct.

    3. Experience Unique Hong Kong CNY Traditions

The Year of the Rabbit marks the return of many authentic Hong Kong CNY customs for visitors to enjoy! Among the must-try experiences, head to the Chinese New Year flower markets for festive shopping and take in good fortune as blooms signify wealth in Chinese culture.

Besides, stock up on luck at the CNY Raceday in Sha Tin, where epic horseraces, lion dance performances and holiday décor await. The energised activity can definitely bring you a lucky start of the year with full power!

The Hong Kong Well-Wishing Festival in Lam Tsuen is another age-old CNY tradition. Simply jot down wishes on a notecard, tie it to a mandarin and toss it into a legendary tree. If the fruit catches a branch, the wishes may come true.

    Hong Kong Well-wishing Festival

22 Jan – 5 Feb 2023 | Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree, Tai Po

    4. Indulge in Classic Dishes with Modern Twists

A time for connection, Chinese New Year brings families together over delicious meals symbolising longevity, fortune and wealth. Year after year, Hong Kong restaurants reinvigorate traditional CNY dishes with fresh ideas.

This year, Green Common has reinvented poon choi (or “prosperity stew” made with meat, seafood and veggies) using only plant-based meat alongside vegetarian ingredients. Meanwhile, Häagen-Dazs has transformed traditional nin gou (a sticky rice cake representing prosperity) into a CNY ice cream cake, which also comes with another option of Chinese candy box (named chuen hup in Cantonese meaning togetherness and perfection).

    5. Give Creative Gifts of Good Fortune

Throughout CNY, Hong Kong people bring gifts to family gatherings to spread goodwill and fortune with loved ones. Putting a spin on tradition, Dang Wen Li by Dominique Ansel bakery has crafted mochi buns in the shape of mandarins – a symbol of good fortune – alongside gift box brimming with sweet delicacies, which features a centrepiece decoration of cute rabbit performing lion dance. On the other hand, The Cakery is whipping up adorable rabbit-themed fondant cookies that are perfect for CNY.

In this festive month of the year, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) invited Korean superstar Rain (Jung Ji-hoon) to spend the Christmas holiday in Hong Kong and to be the honorary guest for the lighting ceremony at the spectacular Christmas Wonderland of “Hong Kong WinterFest”. Hong Kong is ready to welcome global visitors back to the city and the HKTB is glad to have Rain at this special time of the year. Rain has experienced Hong Kong’s unique offerings from every angle, from its unforgettable local cuisine to the stunning skyline and breath-taking landscapes.

    Unforgettable Local Cuisine

Rain says that Hong Kong is a food paradise and that he knows that no trip to Hong Kong is complete without trying dim sum, so his first stop in Hong Kong was enjoying dim sum at a Michelin Cantonese restaurant. He also walked through the West Kowloon neighbourhood, where he enjoyed “typhoon shelter-style fried crab” at a local authentic eatery.

Taking A Scenic Ride On The New Generation Peak Tram

As Hong Kong debuted the 6th Generation Peak Tram recently, Rain took the opportunity to ride on the new generation tram up to the Peak, where he enjoyed the beautiful views of Victoria Harbour and its surroundings, as well as local street snack egg waffle, both of which he never gets tired of.

  • Hong Kong Must Visit 2022 – 8 Exciting Shopping & Dining Spots

Hong Kong Must Visit 2022 – 8 Exciting Shopping & Dining Spots

In the past 3 years, Hong Kong is far from hibernating, it is in fact awake and buzzing with changes. You can anticipate an invigorating experience with exciting new hotspots, particularly in dining and shopping scenes. Bustling with city lights and crowded streets, Hong Kong has been long known as a giant melting pot and this is translated through its vast choices in both shopping and dining experience.

Hong Kong dining is a medley of Michelin standard top restaurants to local exceptional street food and its signature ‘cha chaan teng’. It is witnessing a growing interest in sustainable dining as well as expanding its halal options. No matter what gastronomic experience you are looking for, you will be spoiled for choices. Apart from dining, Hong Kong is famous as one of the best cities to go shopping. From luxurious malls, outlets, specialty stores, and street markets, the diverse selection allows anyone of different budgets, personal tastes and interests to be able to shop their hearts out.

Three Hong Kong Super Fans Sheryle, Vorrarit Anantsorrarak and Euxyn share 8 shopping & dining spots to get you started on your bucket list for your next visit.

    1. Hong Kong Must Visit 2022 – Central Market

Once Hong Kong’s first modern wet market, The Central Market was opened in 1842 and was fully functional for more than six decades before it was revitalised. It was finally opened to the public in August 2021, the new and revitalised Central Market was transformed into a vibrant community hotspot with superb dining and interesting retail options. Whilst the building’s interior seems modernised, its exterior retains its nostalgic character.

Euxyn, who is the owner of HomeKong Mart in Singapore and Malaysia recollected her nostalgic memory of her first visit to Central Market, “A spacious old-school cement staircase greeted me at the entrance. Those faded handwriting typos, display signages, classic red lamps, and the preserved market kiosk gave me a better idea of the past HK heritage. There are so many treasures in these collectives that we should pass on to future generations.”

Another Hong Kong Super Fan, Vorrarit Anantsorrarak, a Thai photographer based in the city described Central Market as “Lots of trendy local-brands stalls, popup store, restaurants, bars, and many fringe art or culture events. It really brings the heritage Central Market back to life to this modern day.”

Some of the notable F&B offerings are Winelog, Mak’s Beer and I-O-N.

Winelog is a wine bar and one-stop wine-appreciating spot that celebrates award-winning labels from all over the globe. Not only will you enjoy good wine, but you will be brought on an educational wine tasting journey as well. Mak’s Beer on the other hand, as the name suggests, serves unique beers that are inspired by local ingredients like sugarcane and dried longan. How interesting is that? You are guaranteed to taste the largest varieties of Mak’s Beers on tap and the brand’s first beer cocktails, which you can only find exclusively at this Central Market shop. Now, to answer your question “Is there a one-stop shop that serves everything?”. I-O-N  has the answer by offering a wide variety in its 3,000 sqft 3-sectioned-open space; a 360-degree coffee, tea, and cocktail bar; a café bar preparing innovative Western dishes with an old-Hong Kong twist; and a four-sided pastry station.

The Central Market focuses on showcasing homegrown talents and small businesses not only in the F&B industry but retail as well. There are many unique ones but do keep a lookout for Slowood and HK Tram Store.

You can find uniquely Hong Kong items like Hong Kong Tramways Monopoly set, diecast Hong Kong buses and trams, and many other whimsical versions of nostalgic Hong Kong elements in the form of everyday lifestyle products here at the Hong Kong store. This is the place to be to bring one of Hong Kong’s signatures back home. If you are an avid environmentalist at heart, Slowood offers everything eco-friendly and zero-waste organic groceries. You can buy what you like in your own desired quantity and bring them back in your own containers. Happy you, happy earth!

On top of these highlighted shops, there are many other businesses selling various uniquely Hong Kong experiences and you have to drop by to personally witness them. After all, it is a playground for everyone.

    2. Hong Kong Must Visit 2022 – Tea Chateau

Tea culture in Hong Kong started at the end of the 19th century. People would buy tea leaves from tea houses to serve visiting guests. Thanks to modernization, tea lovers can now rejoice and enjoy traditional Chinese tea within 30 seconds! The latest hype in Hong Kong, Tea Chateau brings you the traditional Chinese tea culture, but in a capsule. Not only can you nail your tea-to-water ratio to perfection, but the advanced packaging will ensure your leaves will be fresher, and longer. The notable flavours are Free Your Soul, Lingzhi Dahongpao, Chenpi Puer, and their limited edition seasonal flavours. The best part about Tea Chateau is that you are most likely to find it in whichever area you are in, making bringing a piece of Hong Kong back home a breeze.

Euxyn recalled that she was having tea with her friend when she was introduced to Tea Chateau. She was intrigued and visited the shop right away to try and get a better idea of these capsules. The best part is anyone can get a good healthy brew with the press of a button. Not only that, these capsules are compatible with coffee capsule machines in the market and Euxyn mentioned that there are plans to bring this into Homekong Mart. So, if you are keen to have a taste of Hong Kong, you can watch this space for updates.

It serves a variety of Hong Kong-style authentic snacks. The hunt for Hong Kong’s authentic delicacies won’t be complete without cart noodles and they have more than 30 kinds of food for you to choose from. The famous curry fish balls are made of secret sauce with more than ten ingredients and fresh spring fish meat, making you crave more. It is also known for its thick-cut fried stuffed “Sam Boh”, where each piece is fresh and fried immediately, which is especially delicious to be eaten with a cup of milk tea. 4. Hong Kong Must Visit 2022 – Shanghai 618

Shanghai 618 is a revitalised mall in the heart of Mong Kok. The site, which comprises 14 protected historical buildings, was once a strip of waterfront shophouses or tong lau (唐樓) selling sweetened fruit tobacco, electrical appliances, medicinal tea, and leather goods. A century later, it has been restored with modern additions and today you will find retro photo ops, murals paying homage to the street’s history, and independent local businesses selling and making all manner of goods. The shophouses’ interesting façade and interior features will give you a glimpse of what the pre-WWII balcony shophouse looks like. This underrated gem houses some of the 20th-century shop occupants and the new, modern boutique shops and a handful of eateries.

When she was asked what about Shanghai 618 that is special to her, Euxyn responded, “I was in the creative field that brought me to cherish HK heritage, arts, and culture. During one minibus ride, I came across Shanghai 618, which immediately caught my eye. I decided to alight and explore this tenement building. It’s another makeover that presents the past and present in a contrast”.

Handwritten art on the exterior pillar has faded over the years. However, the interior is trendy and hippy, and every corner has different HK-themed vibrant mural painting arts that come with a short historical description. From Euxyn’s previous visit, she also noted that every piece of art is insta-worthy, especially the old Shanghai Street which used to be adorned with so many outdoor signs. There are a few hidden gem stores that promote endangered craftsmanship. The Re.Store is one of them and they are known for their beautiful HK-inspired souvenirs.

    5. Hong Kong Must Visit 2022 – Hung Fook Tong Life

Hung Fook Tong (HFT) was established in 1986 and evolved from a traditional Chinese herbal tea shop to a modern wellness concept F&B business. Over the years, modern cafes are springing up like mushrooms and HFT faced competition from the industry players and they realised they needed to innovate. There is also a growing interest among the millennials in traditional herbal tea shops, which initiated the idea of HFT Life. HFT Life is a brand-new café-inspired concept store that brings together Western and Chinese food cultures and adopts a simplistic design to accommodate the pursuit of modern urbanites toward healthy living.

This movement in modernizing heritage cultural trade has also brainchild cafes like South Herbal Lab, which is a new cafe concept by traditional liang cha (herbal tea) brand Wing Sang Tong. It brings innovative and colourful offerings like a series of “herbal coffee”, which are java infused with Chinese medicinal herbs such as hemp fruit, Chinese hawthorn fruit, and chrysanthemum, You’ll find hemp fruit oat latte; frangipani elderflower coffee tonic; among other innovative items specially curated to attract younger crowds.

More millennials can agree with Euxyn on why they like HFT Life, she shared, ”The uptrend cafe serves soups, drinks and sourdough bakeries, where visitors can now get a seat and enjoy the food in a slow-paced living environment. They even have a #madeinhk corner to introduce the brand’s story where I gain deeper insights into HK culture. What I love the most is their transformation. A new take on tradition successfully rebranded the right herbal tea image, adding touches of modernity to attract lots of youngsters to be aware of their personal well-being. Worth a visit! ”

Apart from HFT’s signature addictive-free soups and healthy drinks, HFT Life also serves fresh baked goods from the local brand “Handmade Bakery”.

    8. Hong Kong Must Visit 2022  – Cruise Liner Mall

Another place of interest that you must pay a visit to when you are in Hong Kong is Cruise Liner Mall. Situated in Hung Hom, Kowloon, it is a part of a bigger mall called The Whampoa. It is a lesser known and underrated gem compared to the more famous shopping malls like Causeway Bay, Harbour City and the rest in Central. Sticking like a sore thumb in the middle of a residential area, this 360-feet-long unique structure houses a Japanese grocery market, AEON, restaurants, theatres, and even a small theme park. This mall carries a meaningful history, where it used to be the largest and busiest shipyard in Asia in the early 20th century. From then until the mid-80s, the dockyard kept changing ownership until it became what it is today. Its history and uniqueness are not known by many. Hence why you should pay a visit if you haven’t and pay a tribute to Whampoa’s glory days.

Experience Hong Kong like never before through its rich outdoors and various activities fit for those looking to stretch their legs and get in on the action.

    1. Experience stand-up paddling across majestic river views

Three Fathoms Cove, right by the seafront villages Yung Shue O and Sham Chung, is the perfect location for a scenic getaway from the city. With views of rolling hills and cerulean waters under your feet, stand-up paddling is the perfect activity to try out while propelling through Hong Kong’s rich biodiversity. Depending on how much you want to challenge yourself, paddlers can go as far as Tang Chau — an uninhabited island around 2.6 km to the west of Sham Chung, to catch panoramic views of Tolo Harbour.

Surrounded by mangroves and fish farms that boast of a vast variety of species, paddling through Yung Shue O will treat you to Hong Kong’s diverse sea life, and maybe even a rare butterfly sighting as the village is also recognized as a butterfly hotspot.

    2. Challenge yourself by taking on the 60km Super Bike Track

For those who don’t mind breaking a sweat, Hong Kong offers various cycling routes for beginners and experienced cyclists alike. Cycle through Hong Kong’s wetlands, parks, and mountains on the new 60km “Super Bike Track” that connects Tuen Mun and Ma On Shan in the New Territories.

Don’t forget to stop by and take a breath of sea air around Cheung Chau, a beloved island among tourists and locals. Feast your eyes on the promenade’s quaint villages, Instagrammable cafes, and contemporary establishments.

    3. Catch the waves and wakesurf along a sprawling peninsula

If you’re more a fan of riding the waves than touching the clouds, wakesurfing is definitely a fun option to try out while in Hong Kong. A popular activity among locals, wakesurfing is the perfect activity to bask in the Hong Kong warmth.

Filipino model and Hong Kong Superfan Jeanine Tsoi shares how she prefers to spend her weekends outside of the city, and would often go wakesurfing in Sai Kung from summer to mid-fall with friends. Jeanine shared that she’d also like to hike more mountains, and try wakesurfing in other areas besides Sai Kung while she’s in Hong Kong for her Master’s degree.

A former fishing village, Sai Kung Town offers visitors a variety of water sports that range from diving to kayaking, making it a top destination come summertime. Surf along the coast of the Sai Kung Peninsula and enjoy the various beaches it has to offer with the wind in your hair and refreshing waters at your feet.

    4. Kayak through 55 million years of history and fascinating volcanic rock formations

Often referred to as a unique “Geopark in the City” due to it being only an hour away from the bustling center, the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark is nothing short of fascinating geo attractions. These include volcanic hexagonal rock columns, sedimentary rock formations formed over 55 million years ago, as well as mangroves and coral communities, all spread out across the Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region and the Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region that make up the geopark.

The geopark is unique not only in its various natural attractions but also in how they allow visitors to experience Hong Kong’s natural beauty. Instead of the usual walking tours, a popular and more exhilarating way to explore the park is by kayaking. Marvel at rock formations and sea caves from up close, and even through uninhabited islands via kayak.

    5. Explore Hakka culture at a former salt-producing village from the 90s

A former salt-producing village that was abandoned in the 1990s, Yim Tin Tsai’s saltpans were developed by Hakka settlers that came to the small town of Sai Kung. In 2015, the historic saltpans were restored for demonstration purposes and earned a UNESCO Asia-Pacific for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Years later, visitors can catch glimpses of Hakka customs, heritage, and folklore from Hakka settlers that migrated over 300 years ago.

    6. Stroll through the idyllic and IG-worthy Peng Chau island

A relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, the small island of Peng Chau offers visitors a variety of vibrant arts spaces, aesthetically pleasing cafes, and quaint little shops full of unique knick-knacks and souvenirs.

A former commercial hub during the Qing dynasty, Peng Chau housed various factories and small businesses on the island and is perfect for those that love visiting places ingrained with history. The island is also full of Instagram-worthy locations, such as old factories, beaches, and temples that showcase its one-of-a-kind personality.

    7. Visit enchanting villages and islands from the longest pier in Hong Kong

Once a closed border town, Sha Tau Kok has gradually reopened with its pier restarting operations in June 2022. Built in the 1960s, the pier is the longest in the city and can take visitors to Lai Chi Wo, Kat O, and Ap Chau among other islands. The pier is located on the east-most point of Hong Kong, close enough for a glimpse of Shenzhen across the border.

Lai Chi Wo is the oldest, largest, and best-preserved rural settlement near the New Territories’ northeast coast. You can immerse yourself in the greens of its mangrove forest and large fung shui woods surrounding its 300-year-old Hakka village.

Another island you can visit is Kat O, a former fishing village that houses the Kat O Tin Hau temple built during the Qing dynasty to honor Tin Hau, the “Goddess of the Sea” and protector of sailors and fishermen, or Ap Chau, best known for its spectacular, Instagram-friendly, ochre-colored rock formations –including one shaped like a duck’s head.

    8. Go on an exhilarating hike over, under, and across Hong Kong’s vast natural beauty

Lau Shui Heung reservoir is also known as the “sky mirror” in Hong Kong

A go-to destination for hikers, Hong Kong’s many trails not only cater to hikers of varying skill levels but also to nature lovers looking for a way to fully immerse themselves into the natural beauty of Hong Kong.

Beginners can try out the Lau Shui Heung Reservoir hike, taking them to the Instagram famous “sky mirror”. Meanwhile, intermediate hikers can try out the Tai Tam Reservoir hike that takes hikers from Quarry Bay in the north of Hong Kong island to the beautiful beaches in southern Repulse Bay through the Tai Tam group of reservoirs.

Experienced hikers can also challenge themselves with the Wilson Trail — stretching from Stanley Gap, on Hong Kong Island all the way to Nam Chung in the New Territories. Indonesian avid hiker and Hong Kong Superfan Ida Serena Purwati recommends  High Junk Peak as one of her favourite trails. Hikers may choose between the easy or leisure trails, both offering amazing views along the way and chill by the beautiful Clear Water Bay Beach after the hike as a reward!

As Hong Kong is gearing up to welcome international guests back into the city, it is now ready to show off more of its diverse and natural wonders. Add these to your itinerary for your next visit and make lasting memories you’ll cherish for years to come while crossing off some items from your bucket list.
