The 2018/19 ABB FIA Formula E Championship debuts the next generation car (Gen2) racing in some of the world’s most recognisable and progressive cities, including Hong Kong, Rome, Paris, Berlin and New York. One of only three races taking place in Asia, the 2019 HKT Hong Kong E-Prix, scheduled as round five of this season, will be held on March 10, 2019.  The series will see 11 teams and 22 drivers racing along iconic Hong Kong Harbourfront’s 1.86-kilometre track, which consists of 10 turns with two hairpins.

    2019 HKT Hong Kong E-Prix – Revolutionary Gen2 car

The highlight of the event, the revolutionary Gen2 car, boasts a distinctive design and demonstrates stepped-up performance, with almost double the usual energy storage capacity.  This allows the drivers to complete the full race distance at high speed without a mid-race car swap, creating more excitement on the track than ever before.

“Attack Mode” is another on-track innovation that will impress speed lovers. Activated via special zones, drivers will be able to access 225 kW power in Attack Mode, with spectators able to identify which drivers are in the mode through the LED Halos on the vehicles.

“We’re excited to see many of the world’s best drivers in action here again in one of the best-known electric street racing series,” said Anthony Lau, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board. “The impressive line-up and ground-breaking innovations this year will surely offer visitors a thrilling race. The HKTB fully supports longstanding professional sporting events like Formula E and will continue to support and stage more international sports events, offering a diverse travel experience to visitors and consolidating the city’s position as Asia’s events capital.”

You can also look forward to an in-depth exploration of the enhanced Allianz E-Village, with installations such as Formula E simulators for fans to experience a drive around the virtual Central Harbourfront track. The world’s first interactive race — Ghost Racing — will allow fans to race against real drivers in actual races live in the Gaming Arena.

The Formula E Tram is another new initiative this year. On March 8-9, selected fans will have the chance to get up close and personal with Formula E drivers making a special appearance onboard the tram, the city’s most iconic means of transportation, creating some unique Instagrammable moments.

  • 4 Days Hong Kong Chinese New Year 2019 Festive Getaway Guide

4 Days Hong Kong Chinese New Year 2019 Festive Getaway Guide

No place celebrates Chinese New Year with as much ardour, glamour and flavour as Hong Kong. For nothing shy of a week, a buoyant mood pervades the city, as the locals engage in much merrymaking and a variety of festive events, from a headline-worthy night parade to our signature fireworks display, fragrant flower markets, temple visits and the ever-popular horse races. Our 4 days Hong Kong Chinese New Year 2019 Guide will help you usher in the Year of the Pig with its full colourful, atmospheric festive cultural experience.

Day 1 – The day before Chinese New Year (4 February 2019, Monday)

Rub shoulders with the locals at a flower market

Arrive in Hong Kong before the Year of the Dog ends to catch one of the convivial flower markets in the city, where locals shop for seasonal flowers and plants that symbolise different well-wishes, such as cherry blossoms that are believed to improve personal, particularly romantic, relationships, and water bamboos which are said to bring wealth. Find also at the fairs creative products and delicacies that truly reflect the unique local culture. For a fully-fledged experience, visit Victoria Park or Fa Hui Park, two of the biggest and most popular flower markets which are packed with people in the evening.

Where & When: Fai Hui Park, Mong Kok (7am on 4 February to 7am on 5 February) or Victoria Park, Causeway Bay (8am on 4 February to 8am on 5 February)

Day 2 – The first day of Chinese New Year (5 February 2019, Tuesday)

Start the new year with a spiritual walk and a healthy lunch

Many locals like to go hiking on the first day of Chinese New Year, as climbing uphill signifies progress in life. The perfect place to go for such a walk is Lantau Island, home to the world’s tallest sitting Buddha statue built outdoor. Start the spiritual journey by taking the cable car from Tung Chung to marvel at views of lush green and the sea along the way. Stop at Ngong Ping Village to visit the “Good Luck Garden”, before sampling Chinese vegetarian dishes at Po Lin Monastery. Do take time to admire the Big Buddha next to the temple.

What: An enlightening experience and a traditional vegetarian meal | Where: Lantau Island – Ngong Ping Village, Po Lin Monastery, Big Buddha

Join the biggest Chinese New Year soiree in town

Head over to Tsim Sha Tsui early to secure a spot for viewing the Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Night Parade, a signature event that began in 1996. As the evening approaches, roving performers begin to emerge along the parade route starting from 6pm, before dazzling floats including those by Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park Hong Kong as well as ebullient dancers, acrobats and other performers from around the world take over the major roads and fill the district with joyful commotion. Paid spectator seats are also available on a first-come, first-served basis for those who want to enjoy the extravaganza at the starting point next to the iconic Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

What: Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Night Parade | Where: Tsim Sha Tsui, running through Canton Road, Haiphong Road and Nathan Road | When: 8pm to 9:45pm

Day 3 – The second day of Chinese New Year (6 February 2019, Wednesday)

Make a wish and aim high

Venture to the New Territories for some morning fresh air and try placard throwing at the Hong Kong Well-wishing Festival in Lam Tsuen, Tai Po. Initially a tradition of the village, it gradually came to attract people from across the city. Buy a placard, which is tied to an orange, write your wishes on it, and throw it at the imitation Wishing Tree. The higher the placard hangs, the greater chance for the wishes to come true. The floats from the International Chinese New Year Night Parade are also on display until 19 February 2019.

What: Hong Kong Well-wishing Festival 2019 | Where: Lam Tsuen Wishing Square, Lam Tsuen, Tai Po | When: 8:45am to 6:30pm

Feast your eyes on a different type of “flower”

Firework, or literally “smoke flower” in Cantonese, is an integral part of festive celebrations in Hong Kong. For many years running, a fireworks display is staged above Victoria Harbour on the second day of Chinese New Year. The about 30-minute spectacle can be best viewed for free along the harbourfront in Tsim Sha Tsui, the Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai, or ifc in Central. It is also a good idea to enjoy dinner at the same time at restaurants overlooking the harbour.

What: Lunar New Year Fireworks Display | Where: Victoria Harbour | When: 8pm to 8:30pm

Day 4 – The third day of Chinese New Year (7 February 2019, Thursday)

Spin the windmill and turn your fortune around

Paying respect to the deities is a customary practice among the locals, especially the older generation. For a glimpse into this tradition, visit Che Kung Temple in Tai Wai, which attracts crowds of avid worshippers every year around this time. Try “Kau Chim”, or fortune stick drawing, to see what fortune awaits in the Year of the Pig. Remember to spin the temple’s famous copper windmill clockwise to summon good luck in the new year.

Get an adrenaline rush at the city’s popular sporting event

From Che Kung Temple, take the MTR East Rail Line to arrive swiftly at the Sha Tin Racecourse for the clamorous Chinese New Year Race Day. The special races, which are the first in the Year of the Pig, provide the perfect opportunity for you to experience horseracing, a hugely popular activity in Hong Kong. Place a small bet to get into the mood and cheer on the jockey of your choice by shouting the number of the horse you bet on like the locals.

What: Chinese New Year Race Day | Where: Sha Tin Racecourse | When: 11am to 6pm

    Beyond Chinese New Year

Hong Kong has a lot more to offer on top of the Chinese New Year happenings. You can easily stay on for another 72 hours to more thoroughly experience what the city is famous for, most notably excellent dining and tax-free shopping. Many shops and restaurants remain open during the holiday period, while major attractions, theme parks and public transport operate as usual.

You can also take a detour to Mainland China, which is conveniently connected with Hong Kong by coach, by train, by air and by sea. The recently opened Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link make it even easier to explore this neighbouring destination.

  • Lunar New Year Luck – 15 Things To Avoid During Chinese New Year

Lunar New Year Luck – 15 Things To Avoid During Chinese New Year

Whether you like it or not, Asians especially Chinese are a superstitious lot. If you are new to Asia and visiting your colleagues or friends during the Chinese New Year period, it is better for you to do some background read up before you get frowned upon. The new lunar year is viewed as a fresh start and it comes with a whole set of rules that you should not break unless you are looking for bad luck. To help you navigate your way through, here are 15 things not to do on Chinese New Year. Gong Xi Fa Cai and enjoy your visiting!

    1. Chinese New Year – Don’t Break Anything

As much as possible, try to avoid breaking anything during this period. If you happen to accidentally break a plate or two, wrap the remaining pieces of whatever you broke in red paper and leave them for five days, but also make sure to say the likes of “岁岁平安” to neutralise the whole situation (and the wrath of your parents). After a period of five days, you can then dispose of the broken items and buy new ones via jasa import china. Throwing out a dish on the first day would also classify as throwing out rubbish, and that symbolises losing wealth.

    2. Eat Poor? Prepared To Be Poor.

Traditionally, congee is a type of porridge that was eaten by the poor in China. The Chinese believe that if you take on the diet of the poor during the Chinese New Year period, you will have a year of poverty ahead of you. So it is important to feast and eat like the wealthy.

    3. Don’t Sleep Early On Chinese New Year Eve

You should stay up as late as possible on Chinese New Year Eve – the later you stay up, the longer their parents will live!

    4. The Number Shall Not Be Named

You should never utter the word (or rather a number) 4. It’s an unlucky number that is associated with death because it is nearly homophonous to the word “死” in Mandarin. Generally skipped in elevators in China (perhaps that’s the secret floor.), Level F is sometimes used instead. Unless you want a death stare from the elders, avoid using that number at all times during the Chinese New Year period.

    5. Chinese New Year – Black & White Is Bad Luck

In the Chinese culture, black and white are colours used during funeral wakes. During Chinese New Year, cast your black and white wardrobe aside and wear red. Red represents good fortune for Chinese but tradition is not far from facts.

    6. Shut Your Trap!

Don’t curse others or use words with negative connotations during Chinese New Year. If you say it, it might happen to you.

    7. Don’t Use Knives, Scissors or Sharp Objects

The use of knives, scissors or sharp objects is to be avoided. For any accident is thought to be an inauspicious omen and the depletion of wealth in the coming year.

    8. Don’t Owe Money!

Payback any money you owe to start your new year with a fresh financial status. If someone owes you money, do not go to his or her home to demand it during Chinese New Year. Anyone who does so it is said to experience bad luck for the entire year!

    9. Stop Sweeping Away Wealth

There is a reason why we have spring cleaning before Chinese New Year. Chinese believe that we are sweeping during Chinese New Year equates to sweeping away our wealth. While keeping your house clean is a good habit to have, let it go for the first 2 – 3 days of the Lunar New Year. Garbage must not be disposed of on the first day of the New Year too. It won’t really hurt, trust us.

    10. Chinese New Year – No Count For Odd Amount

Putting odd amount in red packets brings bad luck for both the giver and the receiver.

    11. Skip Hospital Visits.

Hospitals are associated with sickness and death. If you go during Chinese New Year, you are asking for a year of sickness for the whole family which may also happen because of all the germs and virus.

    12. Avoid Taking Medication.

It is a taboo to take medicine on the first day of the New Lunar Year as it will curse someone to be sick for an entire year. In some places, after crossing 12 midnight on New Year’s Eve, sickly people break their gallipots (medicine pots) in the belief that this custom will drive the illness away in the coming year.

    13. Don’t Wash Your Hair.

Your hair must not be washed on the first day of the Chinese New Year. In Mandarin, hair (发) is the same character and pronunciation as fa in facai (发财), which means ’to become wealthy’. Therefore, it is seen as not a good thing to “wash one’s fortune away” at the beginning of the New Year.

    14. No Washing Of Clothes

The reason behind not washing anything on the first two days of Chinese New Year is because it’s the birthday of a God. Water God to be precise. He actually enjoys a two days birthday, don’t upset the Water God as you don’t know what will happen.

    15. Chinese New Year – No Killing

Killing during Chinese New Year should be avoided as blood is considered an ill omen, which will cause misfortunes such as a knife wound, or a bloody disaster.

We hope you find our list of the 15 Chinese New Year things to avoid useful. It is there to help you avoid back luck and have an awesome Lunar New Year ahead.

Popinjays Rooftop Bar Opens At The Murray Hong Kong

Perhaps it is now a better time to visit Popinjays Rooftop Bar, a sophisticated dining and bar concept At The Murray, Hong Kong, a Niccolo Hotel after all the hype from its official launch in July 2018. Reflecting Hong Kong’s vibrant, cosmopolitan style, the lifestyle destination is designed to attract the city’s flamboyant, fashionable crowd throughout the day and late into the evening.

Popinjays Rooftop Bar – Origins Of The Name

Popinjays, a term once assigned to parrots, takes its name from the resident cockatoos along neighbouring Garden Road, Hong Kong Park and Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens. Naturally drawn to being part of a flock, and rarely flying solo, the habits of these birds embody Popinjays Rooftop Bar’s sociable spirit.

Popinjays Rooftop Bar – Restaurant & Bar

As the hotel’s lifts open onto the rooftop, you will be drawn to the stylish bar and wraparound terrace that frames the restaurant. Dotted with inviting lounges and comfortable couches, the 420 square metres outdoor terrace provides the perfect vantage point to appreciate the most Instagram-worthy views. Along with a world-class selection of classic cocktails, bespoke creations and specialty spirits, you can choose from a variety of bar snacks.

Set within a purpose-built glass pavilion atop the 25 storey building to provide abundant natural light, the restaurant welcomes up to 114 guests. Designed by Foster + Partners, the interiors feature a sophisticated palette of cool greys, gold accents and bold blues while works by leading American artist and designer Brian Donnelly (KAWS) adorn the walls, elevating the sense of understated luxury. Those seeking an intimate dining experience, The Aviary is a private room ideal for business gatherings, celebratory occasions or exclusive dinners for up to 14 guests.

Chef Didier Quennouelle will bring his 25 years’ of experience to the Popinjays kitchen and deliver a modern European-inspired menu. Drawing on the traditions of French gastronomy, the master chef will interpret classic dishes with his signature creative flair lending a distinctive Gallic influence. From Monday to Thursday, you can choose from a four or six-course seasonal degustation menu that will change weekly. A curated selection of vintage champagnes and wines will complement the dining experience.

Every Friday and Saturday, you can look forward to the party-prompting ‘Birds of a Feather menu.’ Available for a minimum of four guests, it features a selection of shared dishes and free-flow cocktails. Transitioning from day to night, a resident DJ will greet Wednesday to Saturday evenings with a smooth blend of chilled tunes and hot mixes.

“On our very first visit to the site, we were inspired by the panoramic views from The Peak to the harbour from the rooftop of the Murray Building,” explains Luke Fox, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners. “We sought to capitalise on the unique location of The Murray by relocating the services to other unobtrusive locations within the building, and creating an extraordinary setting for Popinjays that embraces the intense urbanity and unique topography of Hong Kong.”

“As Popinjays marks the historic completion of the hotel, we are all very excited to welcome our resident and visiting guests to this magnificent rooftop space,” says Duncan Palmer, managing director of The Murray, Hong Kong. “The opening of Popinjays is a highlight not only for The Murray but also the city’s restaurant and bar scene with its one-of-a-kind location and elevation, creative menus, stunning design and contemporary chic vibe.”
