  • What to Eat in Koh Samui – Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch & Dinner

What to Eat in Koh Samui – Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch & Dinner

The cosmopolitan island, Koh Samui, attracts an array of visitors with its white sand beaches and fisherman’s village. It’s one of Thailand’s most unique islands and boasts with sightseeing, activities, and delicious recipes that everyone must try in their lifetime. You’ll find some of the best authentic Thai food in Koh Samui. To really enjoy your time in Koh Samui, your next trip should not only include the must-see attractions, but also the must-eat dishes. To get the most out of your next journey, here’s what to eat in Koh Samui:

    Breakfast

While there isn’t a signature breakfast dish in Thailand, you must try their pathongko with milk or porridge. These donuts are twisted or rolled into balls and deep-fried before being served in the morning with porridge or soymilk. You can find them being sold many places in the early hours. If you’re not big on Thai breakfast, this great island is like one giant mixing pot with an array of choices. You’ll find a Full-English breakfast being served on the beach and coffee in the fisherman’s village.

    Brunch

The meal between breakfast and lunch has more options than the first meal of the day. You can find yourself eating shrimp, mini-burgers, and even sweets. If you’ve been before then you probably already know Sunday brunch in Koh Samui can best be spent at the beach club. Let’s take a look at Sunday Brunch at the Beach Republic, you’re not only going to try one thing for your brunch, you’re going to get a rotating menu of authentic Thai dishes, seafood, vegetarian, and dairy and gluten-free options. Kids are welcome for half the price, so you can bring your family too. It’s a Thai brunch that excites your taste buds and entertains your mind.

    Lunch

There are countless options for scrumptious meals to try before leaving the island. Between lunch and dinner, it can be hard to decide what to indulge yourself on next. From stir-fries to noodle soups, to spicy salads, you cannot leave without trying as many different things as possible. One of the most popular options being Khao Pad. It’s a fried rice with meats like seafood, beef, chicken, and pork. Another perfect choice is Kao Niew Ma Muang. Made up of sticky rice and mango slices, it’s a sweet dessert that can be enjoyed any time of day.

    Dinner

So many choices, so little time. One of the best meals in Thailand is Laab (spicy salad). This Northeastern style salad is made with mushroom or meat and mint. It has a spicy kick that leaves you craving more. However, if you can’t handle spice, it may be best to stick to something like Kai Med Mu Muang. It’s a sweet stir-fried dish that consists of ingredients like chicken, soy sauce, cashews, honey, chilis, and vegetables. Both tourists and locals agree that this dish is one of the best food in Koh Samui.

Eating in Koh Samui can be a tasty and unique experience. You’re likely to spend your mornings eating Thai-style donuts on the pristine beaches, and nights enjoying a spicy or sweet dish with a jungle view. Thailand is a place filled with adventure, appetizing meals, and mesmerizing scenery. It caters to both, budget and luxurious, travellers meaning it’s an opportunity to try something authentic and rare. Your next trip to this melting pot of an island should include the must-see and the must-eats!

  • Banyan Tree Bangkok Vertigo Restaurant And Moon Bar

Banyan Tree Bangkok Vertigo Restaurant And Moon Bar

For awesome food experience in Bangkok, many will automatically think about its cheap and delicious street fares. Not known to many, the Thai Capital also have equally amazing but slightly pricier culinary experiences. Among the best high-end experiences are its rooftop dining and bar scene like the Banyan Tree Bangkok famous Vertigo restaurant and Moon Bar. Bangkok skyline is rich in colour and bustling with tremendous energy, and many hotels and buildings have taken advantage of that by placing their premium at the very top.

During a recent stay at the Banyan Tree Bangkok, we had the privilege to dine at one of the very best of those premium experiences – the hotel’s famous Vertigo restaurant and Moon Bar. Standing at 61 floors up, it was built over an unused helipad and makes use of low walls and escalated platforms to offer a near unparalleled view of the city skyline from one of the tallest buildings around. From there, you can see all the famous Bangkok landmarks, including the Grand Palace, the Chao Phraya River, Wat Pho Temple and the Emerald Buddha.

Best of all, the Vertigo restaurant and Moon Bar both have their own dedicated sections for those who want to dine under the stars or casually sip on a cocktail in an alfresco setting. These include the main dining courtyard, a private dining and lounge space that can be reserved for special occasions, and the Moon Bar itself.  When we went in Sep 2018, part of the Moon Bar was cordoned off for renovation; when re-opened, the management said that the space will include a glass walkway that juts out over the side of the building to let you see the view below with crystal clarity to add on to the amazing skyline experience.

Vertigo offers an array of international cuisine, allowing you to choose from the main a la carte menu or from a selection of custom crafted set menus. On our visit there, we were offered one such set menu, featuring three courses complete with wine pairings.

To start things off, a refreshing appetizer of Spiced Ahi Tuna Ceviche was brought out. The raw fresh tuna, topped with avocado, coriander, lime, chillis, shallots and salmon roe, was perfectly seasoned with a good balance of sweet, sour and spice. The umami and flavourful salmon roe was also an excellent pairing with the clean-tasting sashimi-grade tuna.

For the main course, we were given two choices – juicy Australian Black Angus Beef Tenderloin Steak served with roasted potatoes, grilled tomatoes, asparagus and a creamy bordelaise sauce,

and fresh Australian Barramundi Fish, pan roasted with minted potatoes, lettuce, brown shrimp and a caviar cream sauce. Naturally, we tried one of each, with both equally well done. The beef steak was juicy, tender and rich in flavour, perfectly complemented by the tart sweetness of the tomatoes and the creaminess of the sauce. The fish was seasoned just right as well, pairing well with the potatoes that were just lightly hinted with mint.

To wrap the meal up, we were served Vertigo’s signature Lemon Verbena Crème Brulee, served with honeycomb and citrus granita. The dessert was well balanced, with the Crème Brulee itself creamy and smooth, and the citrusy sugar glaze on top providing a nice crunch. It paired well with the sweet lychee-hinted Moscato dessert wine that was served together with it.

Excellent as the food was, what really set apart the Vertigo experience for us was the signature Banyan Tree hospitality. Throughout the dinner, the staff were on hand and alert to our every need, constantly refilling water and enquiring into the quality of the food and the overall experience.

Just to note though, as a relatively formal restaurant, don’t expect to get in dressed like you’re going for an afternoon at Chatuchak Market – no sleeveless tops or shorts at this place (the restaurant has some jackets and pants on hand to loan to you if you really forget though). And if the idea of an evening dressed up like that in the alfresco Bangkok heat puts you off, not to worry because Banyan Tree Bangkok has you covered – Vertigo TOO (which we, unfortunately, didn’t get a chance to try) is an indoor restaurant and bar one floor below Vertigo which offers much of the same amazing view, except in a cozy and plush indoor setting.

Vertigo and Moon Bar is located on the 61st floor of the Banyan Tree Bangkok. Vertigo opens daily for dinner only from 6pm-11pm, while the Moon Bar opens from 5pm-1am. Opening hours are subject to weather conditions. For more information or for reservations, call +66 (0)2 6791200.

Still one of the most spectacular rooftop bars and restaurants in Bangkok, Lots of Instagram moments here for sure especially during sunset, and a great service at a reasonable price for what it offers without the need to use a payday loans direct lenders. So it’s an excellent venue! Both the food and the cocktails are great!”

  • Top 5 Tips For A More Authentic Travel Experience In Thailand

Have you recently booked a trip to Thailand? Is this your first time visiting Thailand and you want to be sure that it is as memorable and authentic as possible? Not everyone is satisfied with the typical touristy accommodations, sights, and sounds; for many people, the authentic way to discover such an exotic destination requires you to get off the beaten track. But how exactly can you do that in Thailand? Here we’ll take a look at the five top tips that will ensure you have a more authentic and therefore memorable travel experience when you head to Thailand.

Skip the Large Chain Hotels All Together

The first thing you can do is change up where you plan to stay when in Thailand. Rather than opting for the typical large chain hotels, which there are plenty of, look for something smaller, more intimate, locally owned and operated, and something that just has that authentic Thai look to it.

As an added bonus, these properties tend to be much cheaper, which means you can use that money saved on other aspects of your trip.

Just be sure to do your research in advance, paying close attention to the location of the property, the on-site amenities, nearby attractions and dining, and of course what other reviewers have said about it.

Learn the Language Before You Go

Rather than just hoping to get by with your own English language, you can really amp up the experience by learning the basics of Thai before you go. This will give you the opportunity to actually chat and communicate with locals in a more authentic and intimate way. Ideally, you want to choose a very well structured course that takes you through the basics in a logical way and makes it possible for you to reach that conversational level by the time you head off on vacation.

Sign Up for a Private Tour

While you may assume the best thing to do is skip the popular tourist attractions completely, keep in mind they are popular for a reason. Many of them hold incredible architectural, historical, or cultural roots, so they are still worth checking out. A more authentic twist, however, is to sign up for a private tour with a local guide.

Local guides can give you an insight that the large tour groups just don’t offer. This also gives you the opportunity to customize your itinerary, ask all the questions you want along the way, and ask your guide to inject their own ideas on what places you should visit. They may be able to suggest some must-see spots that are off the beaten track.

    Dine at Local Eateries

Much like avoiding all the big chain hotels, you want to stay away from the touristy dining spots. Sure, they will probably serve good food, but it’s not going to be the authentic Thai cuisine that the locals actually eat. In order to experience that, you’ll need to dine with the locals in small restaurants, markets, and other such places.

It can be helpful to do some research on local eateries before you go in order to get some ideas. You can also speak to any of the employees at your hotel and ask for recommendations on where they love to eat.

    Speak to People Whenever Possible

The final tip is to talk with the Thai people as much as possible, get to know them, their culture, their country, and all the many things that they are proud of. It’s an excellent way to connect with them and truly experience an authentic vacation.

All of these tips combined will make it possible for you to have that once-in-a-lifetime experience when you visit Thailand.

  • Banyan Tree Bangkok – Refreshing Oasis In Bustling Thai Capital

Banyan Tree Bangkok – Refreshing Oasis In Bustling Thai Capital

Compared to some of the more exotic Banyan Tree resorts, Banyan Tree Bangkok has a tougher time creating the ‘away from it all’ resort experience. Smack right in the middle of the Thai Capital, can Banyan Tree Bangkok deliver the high standards expected of all Banyan Tree properties as well as its promise to be the oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of metropolitan Bangkok? Follow us as we embark on the urbanite version of the Banyan Tree experience!

Banyan Tree Bangkok – Location, Location, Location

Frequent visitors to the Thai Capital will know the convenience that comes with locating oneself in the Sathon and Silom area in the city. Banyan Tree Bangkok is well placed in the relaxed Sathon neighbourhood and it only takes a 10-minute walk to get to the popular Silom area.

Banyan Tree Bangkok is just 45 to 60 minutes (35 kilometres) and 30 – 45 minutes (28 kilometres) from the Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) airport as well as Don Mueang Airport (DMK) by car, van or hotel limousine respectively. We got to enjoy Tuk Tuk service from the hotel lobby to BTS Saladaend Station (5 minutes away) & MRT Lumpini Station (10 minutes) which basically connects us to anywhere you need to go. For anywhere else, we can always fall back on our Grab app or can simply request for a taxi at the hotel reception.

Banyan Tree Bangkok – Hotel Check-In

If you are staying at the Serenity Club Rooms, One Bedroom Suite, Spa Sanctuary or Two Bedroom Suites, you will enjoy the privilege of doing your check in at the 19th floor Club Lounge.

As always, Banyan Tree check-ins are warm and highly efficient. We were offered welcome drinks, snacks, as well as a fragrant garland which helps to calm us down from our journey and got us ready to embrace all that the hotel has to offer. Before we know it, we were guided to our room with our luggage on their way!

Banyan Tree Bangkok – The Room

There are 325 exquisitely furnished rooms and suites ranging from Horizon, Oasis Retreat, Serenity Club, One and Two Bedroom Suites, Spa Sanctuary Suites to Presidential Suite. All the rooms are tastefully designed to showcase the essence of Thai heritage fused with modern amenities to pamper the senses. Banyan Tree is famed for their thoughtfulness and attention to details. From check in to the moment we stepped into the room, everything has been so personally addressed.

Located on the 56th floor, our 48 square metres Serenity Club room with King size bed offers a spacious and relaxing hideaway from the noise and distractions from the streets below.

Right across the bed are comfortable couches to laze around, watch tv or catching up on some reading before heading out to the streets.

The rooms offer 2 different views of the city – stunning views of the Bangkok skyline or the Chao Phraya River. We went for the latter so we can wake up to the magnificent view of the mighty Chao Phraya River meandering across the city in the distance.

The room also comes with a bathtub completed with bath salts and lotions to melt away aches from retail and sightseeing adventures at the end of the day.

Other than being able to check in at the Club Lounge, our Serenity Club Room also allowed us to enjoy our complimentary buffet breakfast, non-alcoholic refreshments, light snacks, and free-flow of local beer at the Club Lounge. We can also enjoy complimentary use of the boardroom for up to three hours per stay which is great if you are planning for a corporate retreat.

Banyan Tree Bangkok – Wine & Dine

There are numerous wine and dine options available in the hotel. Located 61 storeys above the bustling streets of Bangkok, the famous al fresco Vertigo Grill and Moon Bar serve a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of the city with its delicious food and drinks menu.

Ditch the old concept of just chilling out over cocktails, a full course dinner at Vertigo Grill and Moon Bar offer a whole new dining experience that is worth every penny.

Signature Banyan Tree restaurant Saffron offers innovative Thai cuisine and Southeast Asian specialties.

But before you get started on dinner, loosen up with an evening cocktail, live band and take in the stunning view of metropolitan Bangkok at Saffron Sky Garden on the sky deck on the 52nd floor.

There is also a Japanese restaurant Taihei that serves fine Japanese dining as well as teppanyaki with a view as well as Bai Yun, an innovative nouvelle Chinese cuisine restaurant on the 59th floor. Romsai combines sleek and contemporary with delicious international culinary delights. Goodies provide a full range of sandwiches, pizzas, salads, deli products, pastry & bakery items and ice creams. Apsara is the hotel’s elegant teak rice barge operating along the mighty Chao Phraya river, with dining and drinks cruises. Lobby Lounge for high tea and snacks in an elegant setting. Juice Bar offers tasty light snacks and a good variety of beverages and energizing fresh juices.

Of course, not forgetting the sumptuous breakfast you wake up to every morning.

You can choose to dine indoors with the lush greenery as your backdrop

or embrace nature and dine at the beautifully curated outdoor garden.

Banyan Tree Bangkok – Spa & Gallery

Despite being a relatively ‘urban’ Banyan Tree,  Banyan Tree Spa strives to help you detach from the surrounding built-up environment by offering one of the city’s most luxurious spa experiences with a total of 16 well-appointed treatment rooms spanning three levels from the Spa reception at the 21st floor to the 19th floor. You will be cleansed of all earthly worries after you make your way through this mini bamboo woods.

Indulge in signature spa packages, rejuvenating massages and pampering beauty and hair treatments delivered by Banyan Tree Spa’s professionally trained therapists. As the pioneer of the tropical garden setting, Banyan Tree Spa focuses on the ‘high-touch, low-tech’ approach that celebrates the use of natural ingredients.

Banyan Tree Gallery complements the experience as a socially responsible tourism retailer, offering apparel, handicrafts, eco-friendly products, furnishings, jewelry, and Spa-inspired collection.

Banyan Tree Bangkok – Pool & Other Facilities

We spent so many hours chilling out at our Banyan Tree Bintan Resort pool but I am afraid we could not dedicate the same amount of time to Banyan Tree Bangkok beautiful pool. There is just so much to see and do in Bangkok city!

Nevertheless, we spent a relaxing morning soaking in the pool before checking out for the airport.

Overall, the ‘urban’ version of Banyan Tree experience did not disappoint. The service level as always is impeccable and we were really impressed by the additional efforts put in place to make us feel they are in a relaxing resort rather than smacked right in the busy heart of the Thai capital. Banyan Tree Bangkok is one of the rare gems for folks who demand both a relaxing resort experience while embracing urban indulgence on the same getaway.

For Bangkok based design consultant Ms Jiraparnn Tokeeree from TOUCHABLE, furniture and interior design is more approachable and touchable than the abstract concept of art – for her, art is all around us and she adapts aesthetics and artistic aspects into her designs in order to accentuate this notion.  For the Mekong Kingdoms Cruises Gypsy interior design project, she fashioned a harmonious social atmosphere of modern homely design, juxtaposed with hints of the glamorised bygone era of romantic voyaging.

Wood and thatch throughout blend seamlessly with the verdant surrounds of the mighty Mekong River’s shores through floor-to-ceiling windows and from open sun decks.  The boat’s contemporary designed interiors feature tongue and groove wood panelled ceilings, floors and walls; etched wooden cupboards and closets; solid wood tables; dark woven leather seating; and oversized bamboo daybeds. Local handwoven ornaments adorn the spaces and freshly cut flowers create a naturally soothing ambience, while Thai silk and fabrics drape the furniture in bold colours and lustrous appeal.

The well-appointed spacious sleeping cabins are fully air-conditioned and consist of a king bed and twin beds configurations, each with an en-suite shower and vanity.  Intimate touches of bathrobes and slippers; crisp white bed linen; regular and feather pillows; and a choice of exquisite bathroom amenities provide convenient functions with the comfort of home.  A hairdryer, vanity and makeup mirror are provided, while a personal safe promises in-room safety.

Cruising along the majestic mighty Mekong River from near the world-renowned Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort in Chiang Rai to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang conjures up images of old Indochina, of languorous days gone by, teeming with exhilarating river adventure, mystical temples and stunning untouched scenery.  Voyagers will be captivated by the languid river lifestyle, soaking in nature’s wonders along the Mekong River Valley, marvelling at encounters with fascinating local cultures as they stop at villages and attractions along the way.

Daily shore excursions offer a mix of age-old culture, local immersion and adrenaline-charged adventure and include guided jungle treks; mountain biking in Ban Houy Phalam; freshwater fishing; a traditional weaving workshop at Ban Baw; Laos whisky tasting; a visit to a little known elephant camp in Pak Beng; and the Pak Ou caves – with its breathtaking limestone karst formations, these two caves have been gifted thousands of Buddha images, left by pilgrims over the centuries. Even while cruising the placid waters, you and your loved ones can enjoy a range of wellness, cultural and fun diversions on board, including yoga; folk dancing; learning to speak the Laos language; weaving workshop; and cooking class.

After an adventurous day of exploring Southeast Asia’s most beguiling waterway, the boat’s open decks offer a welcome respite to savour a decadent Champagne high tea while watching the world go by.  As the sun sets, cocktails on the panorama deck are the order of the day before retreating to the dining area for an evening of fine dining and imbibing, courtesy of the onboard chef.

Rates start from USD 5,450 for three nights, four-day cruise from Luang Prabang, Laos, to the Golden Triangle, Thailand; and from USD 6,950 for two nights, three days cruise from the Golden Triangle to Luang Prabang.  Rates are per boat for up to four guests and include all onboard meals; welcome reception with canapés; soft beverages, water, beer, selected wines and coffee and tea; Wi-Fi; shore excursions, English guide, entrance fees and transfers; onboard activities; return airport or hotel transfers; and gratuities.  Children aged four years and under travel free.
