  • JPOT Chilli Crab Soup Base Celebrates Singapore’s National Day

JPOT Chilli Crab Soup Base Celebrates Singapore’s National Day

To celebrate National Day, JPOT is launching Singapore’s most iconic dish, the Chilli Crab, as a soup base in all its restaurants! The local hotpot specialist, known for its “Hotpot Singapore Style”, will be introducing the Chilli Crab Soup Base ($19.80++) in August, so that you and your loved ones can enjoy chilli crab while having your favourite hotpot dishes. It’s the best of both worlds and good news to all who love both their hotpots and chilli crabs!

If you relish JUMBO Seafood’s award-winning Chilli Crab, you will be pleasantly surprised at how similar JPOT’s Chilli Crab Soup Base tastes. The sweet-tasting, mildly spicy soup base, takes inspiration from JUMBO’s signature dish and is perfect for cooking your seafood in, as it brings out the freshness and flavour of it. Folks who order the soup base will also be treated to a fun and interactive dining experience, where they will see their hotpot transform into a yummy chilli crab dish right before their very eyes!

“We wanted to celebrate National Day in a big way, so we decided to introduce one of Singapore’s most iconic dishes as a soup base at JPOT! We first came up with this idea more than a year ago, and the team spent six months researching how to recreate our signature JUMBO Chilli Crab in a soup, so that our customers can enjoy their favourite local dish as a hotpot too. We believe our customers will love having the best of both worlds in one meal,” – Mr Ang Kiam Meng, JUMBO’s Group CEO

For starters, cook the live crab in the soup base for exactly three minutes (use the hourglass timer that comes along with the dish to ensure accuracy). When the soup is ready, you can proceed to cook your buffet of hotpot ingredients. Every morsel soaks up the “shiok” soup base, full of flavour by now, making it a delight to tuck into.

The fun part comes after your hotpot meal! A friendly staff will be on hand to assist you in preparing the actual Chilli Crab dish. Cornstarch is first poured in, followed by an egg, and the soup base (by now a sauce) is mixed thoroughly till it thickens to the right consistency. After a few minutes, you will have yourself a fragrant chilli crab dish! Pair it with some “Man Tous” from JUMBO Seafood or Crispy Beancurd Skin to enjoy it to the fullest.

What’s more, a Chilli Crab Set for two will be introduced at a special price of S$52++ as part of JPOT’s National Day celebrations! The set, only available in the month of August, comes with Live Crab and JPOT’s signature ingredients such as the Live Prawns, Hand- Made Fish Ball, Fish Paste Tofu and Fried Fish Skin! Guaranteed to please the palate, this is one deal that you will not want to miss out on.

  • Gansu Tops Lonely Planet 10 Best Places to Visit in Asia 2017

Gansu Tops Lonely Planet 10 Best Places to Visit in Asia 2017

Global travel authority Lonely Planet has today revealed its 2017 Best in Asia list – an agenda-setting collection of the continent’s 10 best destinations to visit in the year ahead. For this second-annual Best in Asia list, Lonely Planet’s in-house Asia experts have named “blissfully well-connected” yet “underrated and relatively crowd-free” Gansu, China as the number-one destination; while the urban scene South of Tokyo, Japan is in second place; and Northern Kerala, India, “emerging slowly like a butterfly from a chrysalis”, comes in at number three.

Asia is such a vast and diverse continent for anyone dreaming of an escape,” Lonely Planet’s Asia-Pacific Media Spokesperson Chris Zeiher says. “Our experts have combed through thousands of recommendations to pick the best destinations to visit over the next 12 months.”

    1. Gansu, China

Blissfully well-connected thanks to high-speed rail services and upgraded highways, and a new metro will ease traffic in provincial capital, Lanzhou, when it opens this year. Gansu’s crown jewel and world-class Buddhist art site, the Mogao Grottoes, received a huge upgrade in 2015, but – just like the entire region – remains underrated and relatively crowd-free.

    2. South of Tokyo, Japan

With Japan currently on many travellers’ bucket lists, “two cities south of Tokyo are well worth making time for. Yokohama … is just a 20-minute train journey from the capital and packs considerable appeal with its bayside location, eclectic architecture, microbreweries and tasty cuisine…Less than an hour from Tokyo, classy seaside town Kamakura is known for its surfing scene, but also offers a tempting selection of relaxed cafes and restaurants.

    3. Northern Kerala, India

Northern Kerala has long been the underrated half of the state, concealing its backwater charms and emerging slowly like a butterfly from a chrysalis. 2017 marks India’s 70th year of independence and the opening of a new international airport in Kannur – Kerala’s largest – which will provide an easy introduction to the north. The beaches around Kannur, Thottada and Bekal are pristine.

    4. Keong Saik Road, Singapore

Once a crime-riddled red-light district, Keong Saik Road has reinvented itself to become the poster-child for hip ‘New Singapore’. Behind the beautiful colonial and art-deco buildings, you’ll discover the best of Singapore’s famed dining scene … fabulous rooftop views and super-slick cocktail bars … draw a trendy crowd, and you can sleep it all off in a boutique hotel room.

    A post shared by _han✨ (@hannhw) on

    5. Astana, Kazakhstan

“From mid-June to mid-September 2017, Astana will host the World Expo on the subject of sustainable energy. And as of 2017, citizens of 45 countries may visit Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 30 days. Furthermore, the introduction of LTR (light rail transit) and improvements to the existing bus network are making a visit to this modern, cosmopolitan city even easier.”

    6. Takayama, Japan

The time to treasure Takayama is now. Secluded in the mountainous Hida region of central Japan, Takayama is a place where Japanese history and tradition flourish in the 21st century. The Hida region has come into the spotlight anew following the success of the 2016 blockbuster film Your Name (Kimi no Na Wa) – history’s highest grossing anime feature – as devoted fans have made the Hida region a pilgrimage destination for location spotting.

A post shared by namit (@namit56) on

    7. Xi’an, China

Xi’an’s diverse heritage is supreme. And then there’s the biggie: the Army of Terracotta Warriors, celebrating 30 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. Xi’an is vast, but a relaxed tempo reigns and recent openings have boosted an already superb accommodation market; throw in a crop of new bars and cafes plus the 72-hour visa-free policy and there’s never been a better time to visit.

    8. Sri Lanka’s Hill Country

Sri Lanka may be “so hot right now”, but Lonely Planet recommends getting ahead of (and away from) the pack by taking “a scenic train to Sri Lanka’s idyllic Hill Country for a wonderfully temperate escape from the nation’s humid coasts …This tropical isle is endowed with a mountainous interior that is every bit as scenic as the coast, blessed by pleasantly cool temperatures that rarely tip 21ºC.”

A post shared by Caroline Gale (@caroline_gale) on

    9. Melaka City, Malaysia

Boat rides along the meandering Melaka River are popular and soon water taxis will connect Melaka Sentral bus station with downtown. Check out the waterfront gallery space Zheng He Duo Yun Zuan or rummage for souvenirs at the Trash & Treasure flea market. Then head to the Shore Shopping Gallery where the rooftop Sky Tower provides panoramic views across this alluring metropolis.”

A post shared by SoulWinner (@imsoulwinner) on

    10. Raja Ampat, Indonesia

Packed with white-sand beaches, lush jungle and unusual mushroom-shaped islets, Raja Ampat is a biological hotspot … home to some of the richest, most diverse coral reefs on the planet – over 200 diving spots are still pristine – and this, paired with a growing ecotourism offering, means Raja Ampat will no doubt remain king of the islands.

Visitors to lonelyplanet.com/best-in-asia also have the opportunity to enter a competition for a chance to win an Asian adventure for two with World Expeditions.  The winner will be able to choose from World Expeditions’ “Hike and Bike in China”, “Sri Lanka Adventure” or “Cycle Kerala to Goa” tours. Entries are open until 11:59pm AEST on 14 August 2017. Terms and conditions apply.

  • Marina Bay Sands Singapore Unveils Revamped RISE Restaurant

Marina Bay Sands Singapore Unveils Revamped RISE Restaurant

Marina Bay Sands’ international buffet restaurant, RISE, has re-opened after an extensive transformation, featuring refreshed interior décor along with a brand new culinary offering that includes sustainably sourced produce and themed nights. Eight open-concept kitchens will bring you on a journey through global cuisines, before paying homage to Singapore’s heritage through timeless classics. “Live” cooking stations – from pasta counters to meat carving areas – will spice up the dining experience, while the Bar offers a large selection of wines (including organic varieties), cocktails and juices. A new ‘live’ grill station has been added to dinner service every night, featuring grilled satay, fish and barbeque short ribs. You can also look forward to a rotating line-up of smoked meats every day.

    Refreshed Interiors

Taking inspiration from Rising Forest – an art installation of potted trees by renowned sculptor Zheng Chongbin that line the hotel atrium – RISE now bears a new colour palette reflecting nature. The 400-seat establishment’s interiors have taken on hues of emerald blue, jade green, light ash timber and a touch of elegance with bronze. The soothing tones and contemporary interiors offer a warm ambience that blends seamlessly with the canopy of giant indoor trees housed in stoneware ceramic vases.

The interior, furniture and accessories are designed in flowing and curvilinear forms using natural materials. An undulating timber screen, inspired by flowing rivers, is created to give privacy to guests. Hand-made tiles on the buffet counters facade are a reference to the rattan weaving techniques that pays homage to South-east Asian culture. Dark-stained sustainable bamboo flooring is also used to depict earth and nature, while sculptural lightings around the restaurant resemble the shapes of trees and branches.

The outdoor Herb Garden, which grows over 50 herbs, has inspired creations of cocktail and mocktails at the enhanced Bar. A brand-new soda station, complimentary for guests, allows guests to create their own sodas using fresh herbs such as rosemary and thyme, pairing them with fresh fruits, juices and homemade syrups.

The revamped RISE also goes big on the sustainability theme. Ingredients are sourced from responsible farmers locally and in the region; while recycled or sustainable materials are used for everything from placemats to table settings. All glass, paper, cardboard and plastic materials will be recycled, and food waste collected and broken down into waste water, minimising the amount of solid waste that goes into landfills. Trimmings of the herbs from the Herb Garden are reused as centrepieces in the dining room in place of flowers, ensuring nothing goes to waste.

New Dishes and Themed Buffet Nights

New signature items on the menu are consciously curated with sustainably-sourced produce. These include the Ayam Percik in Tangy Peanut Sauce (Malay grilled chicken), a Javanese dish consisting of candlenut, turmeric and fresh herbs from the herb garden. Locally sourced hormone-free Sakura chicken is marinated for 24 hours before being grilled to perfection in the backyard of RISE.

The Baked Salt Crust Sustainable Barramundi is a delicious and sustainably-sourced fish baked in a crust of salt, dill, lemon, fennel and coriander seeds. The dish uses locally sourced Kuhlbarra Barramundi that is also hormone-free and antibiotic-free.

Enjoy the Home Smoked BBQ Beef Brisket featuring hormone-free beef from Australia marinated with RISE’s special rub and fresh herbs before being cooked over a smoker in the backyard.

You and your loved ones can also dig into the national dish of Singapore with the Singapore Chili Crab, featuring a secret sweet and spicy chilli sauce. These signature dishes will be on the buffet line every day.

In addition, every evening brings about a celebration of different international cuisines as RISE presents the best selection from each culture.
