Pink Dot 2017 – Singaporeans & PRs Support Freedom To Love

Despite the tighter security measures and new regulations preventing foreigners from attending the event, Singaporeans and Permanent Residents came in droves to support annual Pink Dot celebration on 1st July 2017. According to Pink Dot 2017’s organisers, close to 20,000 Singaporeans and permanent residents turned up at Hong Lim Park for the event, which is held in support of Singapore’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. For the first time in nine years, Pink Dot is able to authenticate the support from the local core – Singaporeans and the nation’s permanent residents.

Further championing this year’s message of inclusion are Pink Dot’s Ambassadors – three winning personalities who have done Singapore proud in their own unique ways: popular crooner and actor Nathan Hartono, multi-talented theatre and television performer Ebi Shankara, and bemedalled Paralympic swimmer, Theresa Goh.

Additionally, and as a strong indication of growing support among local businesses, the ‘Red Dot for Pink Dot’ campaign, which closes on 4 June 2017, is proud to announce a current tally of 116 local sponsors, far surpassing the initial target of 100. The initiative, led by homegrown entrepreneurs, Darius Cheng of 99.co, Carolyn K of jewellery atelier Carrie K, Bjorn Low of Edible Garden City, and Adrianna Tan of WoBe, was founded on the belief that diversity and inclusion are values that Singapore companies should support.

  • Open Door Policy Launches New Gluten & Dairy Free Cafe Menu

Open Door Policy Launches New Gluten & Dairy Free Cafe Menu

Tiong Bahru’s favourite neighbourhood bistro Open Door Policy will tug your heartstrings again with an honest and rustic makeover of its 100 percent gluten-free and dairy-free (GFDF) concept. Under Assistant Head Chef Freddy Ang, The menu revamp introduces 15 new dishes to the a la carte menu – each paying careful consideration to ODP’s inclination for hearty, wholesome cooking that aims to evoke a sense of nostalgia by imparting familiar flavours with a GFDF twist.

“These dishes may seem simple at first, but there is a good deal of unique execution, substitute ingredients, and months of research on alternative food sources that went into ensuring that we continue to do the GFDF movement justice,” shares Freddy, who has been working tirelessly with his team on his first foray into developing a brand new menu.

    Priming the palate

Perfect for sharing, the new starters whet the appetite with bold, deliberate flavours that prime the palate for what’s to come. Tummy-warming goodness comes in the form of two new soups – a Warm Wasabi Greenpea Scallop Soup (S$23++) that wraps a duet of lightly-seared Hokkaido scallops in a luscious, wasabi-tinged green pea broth; and a velvety Watercress Soup (S$18++) that flaunts flavours seemingly more grown-up in comparison, served with a sous-vide egg and pops of sweet wolfberries.

The Vitel Toné (S$25++), Chef Freddy’s take on the elegant summertime antipasto, features cold-cuts of buttery sous vide veal loin, accompanied with creamy tuna mayonnaise and pickled purple cabbage. All these delivered on the perfect vessel of GFDF fried bread.

Sharing a similar density is the zesty Avocado Jumbo Rump Crab Salad (S$25++) and its crunchy counterparts – crispy green kale, sweet corn kernels, salted egg yolk crumble, and fried charcoal bread.

    Rustic renditions

Firmly anchored in the bistro’s signature style of comfort cooking, the mains demonstrate Chef Freddy’s knack for serving up familiar flavours in rustic renditions. Seemingly simple, the Spaghetti Alle Vongole (S$28++) is tossed in a white miso sauce that is as dreamy as it is creamy. A remake of a dish from the previous menu, the Braised Veal Ossobucco (S$32++) makes a fork-tender encore on a bed of green pea risotto; its richness tamed with drizzles of preserved lemon and pickled purple baby carrots.

    Ocean-fresh flavours rise to the occasion with a Pan-seared Threadfin (S$32++), its buttery flesh juxtaposed with a sweet and spicy Thai mango salad that’s tossed with cashew nuts and crunchy Sakura shrimps;

and a Sous-vide Salmon (S$32++) soaked in a light yet flavourful miso chilli broth that echoes throughout the dish.

Satiate your meat hankering with a Roasted Pork Rack (S$38++) that’s steeped in a five-spice marinate, making for the perfect roast. A spicy pineapple sauce glazes the pork with a rounded tartness, while baked purple sweet potatoes and blanched broccolini lend a well-deserved crunch to the dish.

    Sweet redemptions

    End your meal on a zesty zing with the Calamansi Chocolate Tart (S$16++), a classic citrus meringue encased in a crusty no-bake cocoa shell;

or a velvety Cashew Nut Milk Custard (S$16++) coupled with fruity bursts of kiwi compote.

Old-timers will find a familiar favourite in the Dairy-Free Apple Crumble (S$16++), revived from its former eight-spiced glory with a crunchy oat-based crumble, lathered in a blanket of cashew milk crème anglaise.

Reserve your seats to sample this brand new menu today!

Pokemon GO Fire & Ice Solstice – Catch Typhlosion, Lapras & Other Rare Pokemon

Pokemon GO is working towards its one year anniversary with another awesome event for all trainers! Popularly coined as the Pokemon GO’s Fire And Ice Solstice Event, trainers can expect to see an increase in spawn rate for both Fire-type and Ice-type Pokemon from 4am, 13 June to 4am to 20 June 2017 (Singapore Time), one day ahead of the actual solstice. Other than the heightened spawn rate, there will also be other exciting bonus that aspiring trainers should take note and milk to the max. To help you do that, we are here to drop some hints and tips along the way!

‘With summer quickly approaching in the Northern Hemisphere and winter approaching in the Southern Hemisphere, we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the upcoming solstices than with a Fire-type and Ice-type Pokémon GO event.’ – Niantic.

A post shared by Pokémon GO (@pokemongoapp) on

    1. Stock Up Pokeballs For Lots Of Fire & Ice Pokemon

The reason why we say this is an awesome event is because unlike the past events where you only get an increased spawn for one Pokemon Type for example Ghost Type Pokemon was the focus for Halloween, this new event gives you two at once. Before the event goes live, make sure you stock up enough Pokeballs to take advantage of increased spawn rates for Fire-type and Ice-type Pokemon. Go catch them all!

    2. Get Ready To Catch These Pokemon!

Although it was not officially mentioned by Niantic, trainers can expect to see an increased encounter rates for these Pokemon:

FIRE: Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Vulpix, Ninetails, Growlithe, Arcanine, Ponyta, Rapidash, Magmar, Flareon, Cyndaquil, Quilava, Typhlosion, Slugma, Magcargo, Houndoor and Houndoom.

    3. Stunning Throw For Your Every Catch!

Niantic has finally decided to reward trainers who make an extra effort to execute awesome throws. Curveballs will enjoy special XP bonus for Nice Throws, Great Throws and Excellent Throws!

    4. Don’t Forget To Hatch Those Eggs

While you focus on catching Pokemon, don’t forget to set all your incubators on because XP bonuses are also earned when hatching Pokemon Eggs.

    5. Lucky Eggs Discounts

Niantic is throwing a 50% discount off Lucky Eggs. Best time to stock up if you want to reach Level 40 sooner.

    6. Drive Up Your XP Efficiency

50% off Lucky Eggs means it is time to milk your XP to the max! Stock up on candies and load your inventory with commons such as Rattata and Pidgey for mass evolutions as soon as possible. Given that trainers will see huge XP bonuses for throwing curveballs, you may want to test which method earns you better returns for your Lucky Eggs.

    7. Stop Fighting & Start Developing

Niantic may be temporarily disabling Pokemon GO Gyms during or after the event. This is to allow the team can prepare for a new update focused on collaborative group gameplay features that will get you playing Pokemon GO in fun new ways. When Gyms are temporarily disabled, all Pokémon will return to their Trainers. Trainers can focus on catching and developing their Pokemon during this period.

Venue By Sebastian Opens At Downtown Gallery Singapore

Perfect for casual get-togethers and pre-dinner meet-ups, VENUE By Sebastian is one of the first few restaurants to open at the swanky new Downtown Gallery in the heart of Singapore’s commercial district. Occupying 1,900 sqft space on the ground floor of Downtown Gallery, this 80-seat communal dining establishment is set to inspire you and your loved ones with its exciting contemporary European fare.

Helmed by Chef-Owner Sebastian Ng, former Chef-Owner of the now defunct Restaurant Ember, and Chef de Cuisine Jonathan Lee, former Head Chef of Artichoke, VENUE By Sebastian is guided by the chefs’ beliefs in serving unpretentious yet tasty and well-balanced meals for all diners. Curated with meticulous details over months of experimentation, the extensive menu at VENUE By Sebastian is a harmonious blend of modern European culinary techniques and quality ingredients, imbued with a refreshing touch of Asian flavours.

“VENUE By Sebastian represents a passion that has finally come to fruition after a fascinating journey of discovering food from all over the world. We have translated those ideas from my travels into reality in the kitchen with Jonathan. It is my hope that VENUE By Sebastian becomes the dining destination for friends and family to bond over great conversations and comforting and tasty food.In addition to new creations, regulars from Restaurant Ember days can also expect to see some familiar dishes such as the Chilean Seabass and Sakura Ebi Pasta on the menu“ says Chef Sebastian.

    Menu Highlights

Running on a sharing plates concept, the lunch and dinner menus are designed to feature a mix of communal dishes in sharing portions across eight dish categories namely ‘Toast’, ‘Fritti & Greens’, ‘Pasta’, ‘Raw, Cured & Smoked’, ‘Pan, Coal & Roast’, ‘Sides’ and ‘Sweets’.

The lunch menu features a condensed selection of the dinner menu, whilst a special Bodega Hour menu serving bar snacks and attractively-priced beer and wine from 5.30pm to 6.30pm will be launching at a later date. Diners are encouraged to customise the number of their selected dishes according to their group size on the menu sheet, which is printed daily to incorporate seasonal specials or new creations.

A must-try from the ‘Fritti & Greens’ section is the Chilled romanesco with lemon vinaigrette, almonds and Parmigiano Reggiano ($12). Sourced from France, the dish offers a crisp and refreshing taste when paired with the citrusy and nutty condiments. Another great one from the list is the Cauliflower Fritti with spicy mint aioli ($10), served as small crunchy bites of florets that have been lightly coated and deep-fried.

From the grill, the Iberico Pork Jowl With Gremolata and Lemon ($18) stands out with its robust and well-balanced flavours achieved by pairing the herbaceous gremolata and citrusy lemon with a tender and flavourful cut of pork jowl that has gone through a 3-hour confit before going onto the grill.

For those with a preference for seafood, the Grilled Octopus With Bean Purée, Capers and Burnt Butter ($27) is a signature dish to try. The Australian-sourced octopus is cooked to a perfect tender texture and served alongside a creamy white bean purée and some savoury capers to top.

Regulars who were familiar with Chef Sebastian’s Chilean Seabass with Mushroom and Bacon Ragout and Truffle Yuzu Butter Sauce ($36) will be pleased to find this dish on the menu as well. Lobsters fans will enjoy the Grilled lobster, with Calabrian chilli vinaigrette or Burnt Butter ($24/$39). Served in half or whole portions, the imported Maine lobster is succulent and moist with a spicy kick.

Another notable dish is the Wood-grilled Chermoula Chicken with Lemon ($15), a succulent leg of chicken that is marinated in house-made chermoula for two days and slow-grilled for at least 40 minutes over wood
fire for an intense smoky flavour.

Available only for dinner, the selection of pasta available includes Hand cut pasta with duck and beef ragout and Parmigiano Reggiano ($21), as well as Chef Sebastian’s signature dishes like the Cold pasta with konbu and truffle oil ($22 and the Angel hair pasta with Sakura Ebi and Konbu ($24).

A selection of ‘Toasts’ (from $3) with condiments, ‘Sides’ (from $5) and ‘Sweets’ (from $6) are also available across the lunch and dinner menus.

    Restaurant Interiors

VENUE By Sebastian boast of a seating capacity of 80 pax which includes 22 bar seats and 24 banquette seats. An open-kitchen concept invites you to check out the culinary magic unfurling behind the scenes. The interior design takes inspiration from the contemporary European cuisine and incorporates a soft and elegant colour palette of soft blues and white for an inviting and minimalistic chic dining ambience. Honeycomb patterns run throughout the restaurant from the tile design to the coasters, adding a sense of modernity and sophistication to the overall space.

To complement the concept of sharing plates amongst big groups, the restaurant features a 24-seater banquette in the centre. Smaller tables of four and six can opt to sit at the bar seats for an intimate and cosy dining experience.

  • SRT & Esplanade Brings Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress Back In 2017

SRT & Esplanade Brings Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress Back In 2017

Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress became one of the most successful made-in-Singapore musicals produced with over 100,000 tickets sold ever since it was first staged as part of Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay’s Opening Festival in October 2002. Thanks to the overwhelming demand, Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) and Esplanade are delighted to bring Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress back to the Esplanade Theatre in August 2017.

It has all the right ingredients of a truly epic musical —a young imperial concubine in love, a dying Emperor, a heartless traitor, an idealistic artist and an empire that stands to fall. The musical sets a new standard for Singapore musical theatre, with stylised sets and stunning costume design. Told through the eyes of Kate Carl who is commissioned to paint the Empress’ portrait, the musical recounts Cixi’s trials and tribulations from a clever imperial concubine to a ruthless ruler to unmask the woman behind the painted face.

“We are very proud of this musical. In many ways it defines what SRT is and what Singapore is becoming – a place where the best artistic talent from Singapore and abroad congregate, collaborate and create. Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress is a unique Asian story, based on historical events, then crafted and presented for an international audience. It is emphatically stamped with a ‘Made in Singapore’ label.” – Gaurav Kripalani, Artistic Director for SRT

“Fifteen years since Esplanade commissioned Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress for our Opening Festival, we are delighted to bring this iconic musical back for audiences old and new to enjoy. Our collaboration with SRT to bring some of the most memorable theatre in the world to Singapore audiences is key to our role of making it possible for local arts groups to take greater risks in artistic choices and strengthen their producing capabilities. We are pleased to continue working closely with them and hope many will come to watch this musical which features some of Singapore and musical theatre’s best.” – Benson Puah, Chief Executive Officer, The Esplanade Co Ltd

The creative team behind the musical are familiar faces in the local art scene. Dick Lee, the internationally renowned songwriter and composer penned the music with lyrics by Olivier Award winner Stephen Clark. The Director, Steven Dexter, has worked with SRT on numerous musicals in the past including A Twist of Fate, Friend Rice Paradise and most recently The LKY Musical.

The story of the infamous Empress Dowager is helmed by a cast of international and Singapore stars. Home-grown singing sensation Kit Chan returns as the heroic Empress and is supported by a stellar cast which includes Sebastian Tan, Cheryl Tan and Life! Theatre Award winner Benjamin Chow. West End sensation Earl Carpenter (Les Miserables) and Broadway star Steffanie Leigh (Mary Poppins) also star in the musical.

  • Cirque du Soleil Back To Enthral Singapore with KOOZA July 2017

Cirque du Soleil Back To Enthral Singapore with KOOZA July 2017

A modest start with just 20 street performers in 1984, Cirque du Soleil has enthralled more than 160 million spectators in over 400 cities in more than sixty countries across six continents. This July, they will returns to Singapore with KOOZA, a brand new production paying homage to their roots by combining thrilling, heart-stopping acrobatic performance with the art of clowning. The show will be presented in the intimate setting of the signature blue-and-yellow Big Top from 12 July 2017 at Bayfront Avenue, next to Marina Bay Sands. Tickets on sales now!

Since its 2007 premiere in Montreal, KOOZA has been seen by more than 7 million people around the world. The name KOOZA is inspired by the Sanskrit word “Koza” which means “box”, “chest”, or “treasure”. The show boost of an international cast of 50 acrobats, musicians, singers and actors from 19 different countries performing heart-stopping feats and laugh-out-loud antics to a live soundtrack fusion of jazz, funk and Bollywood beats.

M1, who first introduced Singaporeans to the breathtaking and enthralling world of Cirque du Soleil, has teamed up with the Canadian phenomenon again, to present another entertainment spectacular. KOOZA will be Cirque du Soleil’s fifth production to be staged in Singapore with M1 as the presenting sponsor, after Saltimbanco in 2000, Alegria in 2002, Quidam in 2005 and Totem in 2015.

“The M1 brand has a long association with the Cirque du Soleil Big Top experience in Singapore, starting from Saltimbanco in 1999 through to Totem in 2015. We share an appreciation for the arts, alongside values like creativity, with Cirque du Soleil, and it is thus appropriate that we celebrate M1’s 20th anniversary this year as KOOZA’s presenting sponsor. M1 customers can look forward to a range of fun activities, and exciting promotions including priority booking and a 15% discount on tickets. We will also be engaging with our supported schools and adopted charities to bring their children and youth beneficiaries to join us in enjoying this spectacular experience,” said Mr P.Subramaniam, Chief Marketing Officer, M1.

“The KOOZA story follows “The Innocent” who represents the child within us all, as he takes a journey of self-discovery through a kingdom of eccentric characters, electrifying thrills and out-of-the-box surprises. “KOOZA is about human connection and the world of duality, good and bad”, says the show’s writer and director David Shiner. “The tone is fun and funny, light and open. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it’s very much about ideas, too.”

In addition to showcasing performance in its rawest, purest form together with slapstick humour and amusing antics, KOOZA also contemplates deeper notions which include strength, harmony, identity, fragility and power. Presented in a colourful medley of costumes and characters, KOOZA springs open like a bejewelled toy box to capture your imagination and set your pulses racing.
