Marina Bay Sands Comes Alive With The Sound Of Music Singapore

Marina Bay Sands Mastercard Theatres is coming alive with one of the world’s best-loved musicals THE SOUND OF MUSIC Singapore beginning from 9 November 2017! This highly-acclaimed production comes from the famous London Palladium where the lavish and dazzling show celebrated a record-breaking 954 performances and was seen by over two million people. In Singapore, almost 70,000 watched the show during its five-week season in July / August 2014. Back by popular demand, THE SOUND OF MUSIC Singapore will run until 3 December 2017.  

THE SOUND OF MUSIC Singapore tells the true story of Maria, a apostulant from Nonnberg Abbey who left the abbey to become the fun-loving governess. She changed the lives of the widowed Austro-Hungarian Navy submarine Captain von Trapp and his seven children by re-introducing them to music, culminating in the family’s escape across the Austrian mountains as tensions rise before the outbreak of World War II.

When Maria first arrives at the villa of Captain von Trapp. He explains her duties and summons the children with a boatswain’s call. The seven children march in, clad in uniforms. He teaches her their individual signals on the call, but she openly disapproves of his militaristic approach.

Alone with the children, she breaks through their wariness and teaches them the basics of music (“Do-Re-Mi”). With its unforgettable score, THE SOUND OF MUSIC touches the hearts of all ages and contains some of the most memorable songs ever performed on the musical theatre stage which includes My Favourite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, Edelweiss, The Lonely Goatherd, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, and of course the glorious title song The Sound of Music.

In addition, eighteen of Singapore’s young actors and actresses will be playing the coveted roles of six of the seven von Trapp children, with three children chosen to alternate each character. The children will perform in rotation throughout the season as the small and cute Gretl, the brothers Friedrich and Kurt, as well as their sisters Marta, Brigitta, and Louisa.  The casting of the von Trapp children for The Sound Of Music Singapore season are as follows:

THE SOUND OF MUSIC’S original score is a result of the genius output of composer Richard Rodgers collaborating with the lyricist and librettist Oscar Hammerstein. The original 1959 Broadway production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was Rogers and Hammerstein’s biggest success.  The 1965 movie starring Julie Andrews as Maria won five Oscars, including Best Picture, and remains one of the most popular movies of all time.
